IIRC, the idea was to keep to the 1000 basic words at http://simple.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:List_of_1000_basic_words. "Recent" isn't one of them, but "new" is.
Three new admins were made last month, so if you suggest changes to the navigation at http://simple.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Simple_talk someone should be able to implement your suggestions.

Thanks for the pointer.
I have suspicion that the one thousand word vocabulary idea has been modified. I recall that the "BBC Worldservice" had dropped the news in English using that restricted vocabulary.
