Why do we even need mediators? Is there some problem which we have been unable to resolve? Yes, we have edit wars...and we resolve them. Mediators might "solve" edit wars easily, if I were the only editor Id solve them pretty quick too. What's the rush? Just relax and accept the fact that arguments are inevitable -- some "mediator" isn't going to solve the issue.

Mediator can say: You stay in your corner and you in yours, otherwise I'll go get Dwarf-Lord Jimbo and after reviewing your heinous dogfight he will most assuredly smite thee and send thee flaining into the Depths Below.
This will save some grief. So instead of a long drawn out nail scratchin' he-did-it-no-he-started-first-no-he-did-no-he-did argument, everybody sits quiet and lets "recent changes" alone.
