Personally, I would rather not have (to deal with) this while browsing. Some users, I think, would rather just use the normal display.

If we do make it a default, can we make it less of a javascript hack and more of an integrated feature? My computer and/or browser has difficulty loading popups, whereas it has no difficulty with similar popping up action on other sites (such as livejournal and.. other.. sites..).

Begin with opt-in. If it's really that good people will turn it on. If a super-majority choose to turn it on the default preference can always be switched later.
