We had some confusion over this (Sydney Poore's post being delayed), so here is how it works.
* Anyone can join wikien-l. You get all posts from that moment. If you make a post, it's moderated by default. * When we go through the mod queue (I hit it most weekdays), we take any first posts and (in general) accept the post and unmoderate the poster. * If it happens no mod looks at the post ... it sits there until one does! * The spam still comes in by the SHITLOAD. Our sincere apologies if anything gets lost by accident ... it's rare but it happens.
We don't have a moderators' rota, it's pretty ad-hoc. But if one of the others could check the queue Saturday and Sunday that'd be helpful ;-)
This is more work than it should be. But moderating people's first posts has been fantastically useful in keeping the trolls at bay, particularly the ones kicked off the list repeatedly.

In other words, it's a perfect way to keep ACTUAL debate from happening. And when messages don't arrive for five days, don't worry - it doesn't "mean" anything. Because they "poor, overworked" moderators like DG (who instituted this mindless policy in a quest to stop criticism of his own behavior) actually disallow a post so that anyone gets the message their post was rejected, or not after DG's expletives were forwarded back to the list. They just leave them in limbo forever.
Then again, this message will never see the list. He'll see to that. Unless the only decent mod of the lot gets to it first, that is.

From what I can see, the list is replete with actual debates going on
all the time. In the past year and a half, since I became list admin, there has been 2392 discrete conversation threads, if Gmail is to be trusted. Sounds pretty healthy to me.

So who do you mean, and is that who let your latest message through?

I let his/her latest message through, because I wanted to reply to it. Am I the "only decent mod"? Nah, he/she's probably talking about Fennec, who's much nicer than me.

Really? I've posted twice and was told both times my message had to go through the mod queue (waiting to see if this one does).

Looks like this one went straight through. Occasionally we miss ticking the "unmoderated" box. Note that checking each morning, the queue will typically contain one message from a human buried in 100 pieces of spam - please excuse the occasional human error!

Wait! There are humans on this list? What kind of moderator are you?
