my school blocks at the least 95% of all proxies. I try and browse through wikipedia and it tells me that it is wikipedia is using a proxy server known as http://privacywant.info. Is this something that has happened to anyone else before, or is it just particular on mine.
thanks

Never heard of it.

What do you mean "browse through wikipedia"? Wikipedia is not a proxy, you can't browse the rest of the web through it...
Are you trying to edit Wikipaedia or just read it?
If you just want to read Wikipaedia, you could try Tor. Tor is an anonymising proxy network, and with each connection you get a series of three nodes. While most of these nodes are published, and hence easily blockable by your school, there are special nodes called bridges which are not published which you can use as entry to the Tor network. So, if your school is blocking the nodes in the Tor directory, you could configure Tor to use bridges.
Tor has to be installed, I don't know if that's a problem. There are bootable LiveCDs with Tor on them, though.
Note that you probably won't be able to edit Wikipaedia via Tor, as Wikipaedia blocks most of Tor from editing. Tor is good at evading entry blocks, as explained above, but makes no attempt to evade exit blocks.
You can find out more about Tor here: https://tor.eff.org
This problem is solvable - Wikipaedia could commit a patch for nym, which would allow you to get a cryptographic certificate from home, using your real IP, and then carry that cryptographic certificate to school and use that to identify yourself to Wikipaedia. However, Wikipaedia is unlikely to commit the necessary patch.

Only the alpha version of tor supports bridges. It was added in 0.2.0.3-alpha. That said, the alpha version seems reasonably reliable.

Well, I generally run the latest alphas, which at the moment is 0.2.0.6-alpha. I am quite happy with it. : )

It seems that you want to try the complicated technical solutions before the simple ones.

Tor is not complicated, and it has a very high entrance blocking resistance. There is another proxy network I could recommend, but it has both a high resistance to both entrance and exit blocking, so if I mentioned that, I'd be giving instructions for circumventing Wikipaedia's effort to block proxies from editing. So, I suggest Tor. : )

Clarification: Tor is complicated, but using it is not.

Installing Tor on a school computer, if it's even possible, would almost certainly be in violation of the school's rules and policies regarding computer use.

1. We don't know if this person is at a children's or teenager's school or an adult's school. Colleges and universities are often known to have filters too. 2. Frequently, censors don't bother to legislate against reading things, they just use technical measures to stop you. 3. We don't know whether the person is using the school's computer or his or her own computer, but connected to the schools internet. 4. There are LiveCDs. 5. If the school computers run on *nix, individual users can generally build programs from source.
Most likely, if the school *really* doesn't want students installing software, the permissions will be set up to prevent it.

Your 3rd point is the only one that's really relevant, and even then it wouldn't be surprising if the "computer use policy" or whatever they call it bans anonymisers.

Not only is that proxy not operated by Wikipedia the English edition blocks users at that proxy from editing: http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Special%3AIpblocklist&ip=64.19...
If you'd be willing to provide contact information for right authorities (probably the IT department) for your school to me privately I'd be glad to get someone to contact them and sort this out.
It may actually be that the computer you are using is configured to use that proxy. Do you get that message about sites other than Wikipedia?

It should be noted that in many school districts this sort of thing is managed at the district level rather than at individual schools. Individual schools may not have personnel on staff who are able to understand much IT.

Ok, so i can get to any homepage of wikipedia but as soon as i try to do any type of search the schools filter (barracuda, i think its spelled that way) stops it. The computer is mine and i have never used privacywant as a proxy before, and i searched through the registry a little bit trying to find something and didn't find anything on it. And as far as i know its not blocked any where on campus, i dont know if there is a setting im missing that might have gotten changed due to spyware or virus, but i tend to keep my pc pretty clean.
You probably need to ask your IT helpdesk, they're the only ones that know how the filter is set up.
We have Barracuda at our school. it doesnt block https:// addresses, try using https://en.wikipedia.org
