Sorry to post such an incredibly lame off topic. Over the last week, the amount of spam getting through gmail's filters has gone up hugely for me. It's coming in through the 5 or so email addresses I have that forward to the same account in equal measure, so I can't blame one email address suddenly getting extra exposure. Has anyone else experienced like this? I was previously getting around 1 spam a day making it through the filter, but now it's like 10 or even more per day. Lots of it is a weird, right-justified format, all nonsense text (jumbled quotations from something or other) whose purpose I can't divine...
Thanks anyone for any observations, comments etc.

Lame response to a lame off topic post :) but yes, I am getting more spam recently. Most from viagra and such. I only use this e-mail for the wiki mailing lists so I assume someone is collecting e-mails from that.

The spammers are indeed getting smarter. But I'm still getting < 0.5% that makes it into my inbox, rather than getting caught in the spam filter. I press the "report spam" button with great glee.

A lot of that is masses of text to clog spam filters that work on word frequency, with the actual content in an image at the end.
(I wonder if there's some sort of online encyclopedia that might have information on this sort of thing.)

The good thing, though, is that the more spammers try to mask what they're pushing,
a) The spam becomes easier to distinguish by human eye, and b) The spam becomes less effective, since it's a much poorer advertisement.

Very true. It's very easy to ignore an email with a horribly-misspelled subject title with one of several thousand ways of describing Viagara or erection.
(I wonder if this email will pass the spam filters?)

Mine went up drastically a month or two ago. So far today I got about 350 in my spam folder, about 50 which were caught by my own filters but not gmail's (ones going to old retired addresses, which I filter and keep around for the analysis which I'll probably never get around to), and 11 in my inbox. Anecdotally it seems to me that some spammers discovered that putting one or two random words in the subject works wonders on getting through gmail's spam filter. That's one problem with using such a popular email service - the spammers get to test their spam on the filters.

Just checked, and yeah, I'm getting the right-justified crap.

I get precisely 45 spam messages a day, but Gmail catches almost all of them.

If you want some of my old ones, just ask... :)
