I would be against this however making it the First in the tab ordering would be great. Tab once and its there and ready to start searching.

We also get continued requests, now even through the info-en mailinglist for the cursor to be automatically put in the search box.
Personally, I don't like it, but maybe it can be made optional?

So where does the cursor go at the moment? I can't see any harm in it defaulting to the search box.
I'm a little reluctant to formally suggest adding a wikicities-style Google search box, as I know Brion and Kate (and probably others too) have invested a fair bit of time and effort in the current Lucerne search system, and I don't want to offend anyone :-/

There is also the possibility that it could be considered to be bias towards Google. The only reason we have the Google box on the "search disabled" page is that it is the only way WP can be searched. Now, of course, if Google want to promote themselves and donate the coding and algorithm for their search engine to Wikimedia, cool!
