But seriously, I'd like to propose a new "What Wikipedia is not" item:

this means we don't have the nine million digits of pi; or the Helsinki telephone book, or my shopping list from last week.
This isn't anything new. "Wikipedia is an encyclopedia" is our third most important policy. That means that we don't include the entire gene sequences of organisms, source code for entire free-software programs and yes pi to one billion places (or anything above 40 places for that matter).
These things have and should continue to be deleted right away and without any apology. I am surprised that the pi to x places entries weren't deleted right away. There are plenty of other places to mirror this information but Wikipedia isn't one of them.
Focus people! We are building an encyclopedia. Granted a huge one, but an encyclopedia nonetheless.

agreed. you and I and many others here understand what is meant by that. Seems some people don't.

I would gladly delete those pages right now. But I fear that Fonzy and Lir will resurrect them, and we'll have another edit war on our hands. Then again, we've explained over and over and OVER again why they are not material for an encyclopedia, and Fonzy & Olivier just don't seem to get it, and Lir (IMO) is just trolling. What's the correct course of action? an interminable debate on deletion, or an interminable delete/create war?

Yup.
Hi Tarquin!
1) The Pi to .. pages should be deleted immediately. Fonzy disagrees, but he seems to be reasonable enough to tolerate the decision. We are already linking to Pi as a Gutenberg text.
2) The new Lir account(s) should be banned/deleted without further notice ("Return of the Killer Lir" being the current one). They are obviously in violation of our current policy to ban Lir. I'm CCing this to Brion because he seems to be the person to do bans on signed on users.
I also suggest that Bridget [name omitted for privacy reasons] (Lir) be removed from this mailing list. I'm currently using a webmail account that doesn't seem to have any filtering, so I'd appreciate that. If this becomes a long-term issue, we need volunteer moderators for the mailing lists who approve new members (this is an option in the software we are using).
The vandalism of Lir's page by Clutch is a separate issue that also needs to be dealt with.
Let's clean this Lir mess up so we can work on building an encyclopedia again.
Regards,
Erik
