This turns out to be factually incorrect: the userbox issue didn't blow up until the "Catholic Alliance of Wikipedia" specifically tried to use userboxes to do an end-run around the NPOV policy. Then it was on.

Not to any serios degree. Well within our normal limits for dealing with organised attempts at POV pushing. The new year event appears to be the key factor in radicaliseing people.
