I'm going to sound like a snob. Why would anyone think tenure at a private college in
the mid-West in theology was any kind of high academic profile? Academics would know how
to rate this (i.e. there are thousands of middle-aged guys in this general category).
I don't know that anybody has suggested it was a *high* academic
profile. My point was more that being a full professor has a social
standing both in the academic world and in the population at large. If
you compare with a situation where Essjay claimed falsely to be a
garbage collector or a busboy in an all-night diner, you'll see what I
mean. We wouldn't be having this problem.
