Overall, I think that 'Nupedia' is a much better name than 'Wikipedia', and I sort of wish now that we had simply opened Wikipedia under the name 'Nupedia wiki'.
Hm. Our two major defining characteristics are 1) We let anybody edit at any time (that is, we are a wiki) and 2) we are an encyclopedia.
The "Nu" in Nupedia means next to nothing other than to be phonetically similar to "New." A new encyclopedia. So what? GNU, however, means free as in content freedom. Now /that/ would be a central defining characteristic of a static distribution of Wikipedia.

It also means GNU, that is, the GNU project (www.gnu.org). And that brings with it a whole baggage of other connotations. Nupedia is bland. That can be a good thing sometimes.

While the new happy post-it-note styling of the homepage is a cute and enterprising experiment in design, it's amateurish, arbitrary, and busy.
This is why we have skins! Please make this an optional skin only.

Just make your own main page and bookmark it, that will have much the same effect. It's the first time vistors we want to impress, and for them we want to have either a decent main page or a decent "default main page skin". I happen to think the former is better since it's easier to collaboratively edit.

I plan to do some more work on a default main skin. I posted a rough version of what I had in mind about a week ago on the tech mailing list. (you will also see my design goals on that test page)
I've had some positive & constructive feedback so far and when I next have time I will go through people's comments, make changes and release another work-in-progress for further comments.
