Well, I guess just having a vote cascade on the mailing list isn't going to work. Hrmph. Anyone know who specifically is "in charge" of deciding what Wikimedia configuration to use? Or is the problem perhaps that there _isn't_ anyone specifically in charge? :)
Until now, developers simply judged consensus - usually from the mailing list. If they hesitate to do so now, with 100 times as many contributors as we had 2 years ago, then let's put it to a vote.
Angela, what's the proper way to vote on this?

I'd advise not voting it (http://usemod.com/cgi-bin/mb.pl?VotingIsEvil). There's nothing to guarantee developers will carry something out simply because it was voted on. There is a voting mechanism inside bugzilla (http://bugzilla.wikipedia.org/page.cgi?id=voting.html) but I'm not aware of anyone taking the results of that seriously.
I think the suggestion of using a non-Wikimedia site to trial this first would be a good idea. If that's done with no problems, someone might be more willing to risk it on Wikimedia servers. I'd offer Wikicities, but we're still on 1.4.
Angela.

Hmm non wikimedia sites with high trafic that use mediawiki 1.5. Could be tricky.

It's just as likely as finding a website running the latest bleeding-edge version of (insert name of software here) that isn't (insert name of developer here).
