In order to assist with fundraising I need to have a little more background. How do funding drives like http://www.linguistlist.org/donation/fund-drive2007/wikipedia/ fit into the WikiMedia Foundation funding drives, if at all?

Yes.

I have no problem with good, useful edits being made by domain experts who are paid for doing so. I think we need to have a deeper discussion about paid editing that does not devolve into knee jerk reactions. There are many COI issues to worry about, but there are also countless ways in which people across the planet could usefully contribute to making Wikipedia a better learning resources, paid or not paid.

There was discussion on wikien-l and foundation-l about this. The threads start at http://lists.wikimedia.org/pipermail/wikien-l/2007-April/067693.html and http://lists.wikimedia.org/pipermail/foundation-l/2007-April/028995.html
Gerard has blogged about it at least twice. http://ultimategerardm.blogspot.com/2007/04/linguist-lists-wikipedia-update-vote.html http://ultimategerardm.blogspot.com/2007/04/linguists-go-wikipedia.html

Technically, I think the linguist was being paid to facilitate the editing of Wikipedia.
I'm surprised you hadn't heard - I know it's been discussed (positively) on this mailing list before. It's pretty much exactly what we could want from paid editing.

And on foundation-l, I think. GerardM was publicising it too.

As I understood it, they were having a fund drive anyway (for them) and raised some extra funds to hire a person to work on Wikipedia articles. They weren't trying to raise funds *for* wikipedia, just for paying labor that would work on wikipedia. Basically they were trying to get a vote of confidence from their community that it would be a good thing to do.
I've not heard anything about how it's turned out or what actions they've taken... has anyone else? phoebe

We only ever heard of it after the money was raised, I believe - their fund drives are short and sharp. But, yes, the link was there with it.
