I don't think you need anything specific. Random fansites are probably poor candidates for external links. However, fansites with some kind of official blessing might be good, or ones frequented by notable people connected with whatever-they're-a-fansite-of, or long-established and high-traffic ones in some cases.

A good example of an "official" fansite is The Simpsons Archive ( www.snpp.com).
