I completely agree. The problem is not with giving people the ability to tell the community a little about themselves, it's with people who misunderstand the nature of the user page. It's not like being at home where you can do what you want, it's more like the lounge of a private club, where you can engage in idle banter but are still constrained by the rules of the club and are still required to show consideration for those around you.
