In the articles I've worked on, and I mostly work on biography and a little on religion, I've not encountered any problems in applying NOR. That's why I keep looking for a good concrete example of what exactly is the problem.
The problem is this - at least in literary studies, there is not a focus on creating broad overview sources. Sometimes you can compensate. Sometimes you can't. But even when you do compensate, it often involves either using sub-par sources or working in an awkward and artificial manner that bears little to no resemblance to normal scholarly practice in the field.
It's a big part of why our fiction articles suck. (Fanboys being the other big part.)
