In any case, the "Citation needed" thing comes from us. The idea of someone in a crowd holding up that sign comes from XKCD, it seems, but the wording is from us. However, ideas are not copyrightable, only expressions are.
But you're probably right; 'citation needed' is too short to copyright. Not to trademark, of course.
