While "I've never heard of it" might rarely be used in an AFD, it might be what motivates one to file with a more "professional" sounding reason. Of course this is speculation on my part.
In the case of webcomic AFDs, I think (and this is also speculation) that they are due to a "anti-fancruft" sentiment among some editors and admins. For example take a look at this AN/I post about one user who made a lot of webcomic AFDs and was called to the carpet for them...
What's interesting is that he sounded absolutely bewildered that there was opposition to his noms and that more editors wouldn't help him fight the fanboyz.
