People in academia are afraid of things they don't know. When they use, edit, and come to trust wikipedia, they'll recommend it for their students.
Also, just as we have wikipedians administrators, and wikipedians by fields of interest, why don't we have wikipedians by fields of expertise, with credentials (not necessarily academics) to beef it up.
