Apart from the technical fixes which are being addressed in other replies, I'd like to ask people with experience of this whether the IP autoblock is visible to the admin when he blocks a user.
No. When you block by name, you have no idea which IPs they're using. That's part of the privacy issue. Sysops are not allowed to know the IPs of logged in users.
