I don't find that situation unfortunate necessarily. It depends on exactly what's being discussed.
It's regrettable if selected snippets of a conversation, in which the timing and context are not provided, are providing the appearance of a scandal where the principals involved assert that the facts of the matter are that there was not one.
I could take a few quotes of mine out of context and make it look like I'm doing some pretty bad stuff, and could do it with anyone else whose communications I see, pretty much. I assume that as a rule, people around me will be ethical and if they believe there's a problem, will at least communicate enough of the context to accurately represent things.
The problem with reporters and scandals is that out-of-context is very attractive to the public...
