Every day scientists from western countries scour nations all across the globe to learn about traditional fold-remedies, drugs and treatments. They constantly test them in peer-reviewed studes to see if they actually work.
Unfortunately, the latter is not true. The great majority of studies is financed by the pharmaceutical industry. And the pharmaceutical industry is not interested in testing traditional remedies, because they cannot be patented. They are interested in them, but then to analyze the herbs etcetera used, hoping to find out what substance in them is having the desired effect, and then go on with only this substance or one that looks like it.

Or they find the traditionnal plants, that inspired modern medicine. They make a little genetic twist on them, just enough for it to be declared "invention", they patent the resulting plant, and if possible the genetic sequence.
Then they put everything aside. It is not to be used *now*. It is meant to be a reservoir for latter needs. And mostly, a nice way to prevent competition from other firms.
It is patenting not to be paid back research, time and money involved, it is just patenting for protection of business future.
