In the enwiki-20070908.xml dump there's exactly 2.216.516 redirects. The number is based on the *last* revision as of the aforementioned September enwiki dump.
Only syntactically valid #redirects are counted (that is, balanced pairs of [[...]] ). So far my counter does not regard whether the *target* page for the redirect actually exist.
The number was counted using my own tool, work name "RILMediawikiProcessor" **
