We are normally able to figure out when something is particularly embarrassing. I, at least, have no hesitation in erring on the side of caution by blanking discussions if I think them problematic - before there are any complaints. Yes, I meant, I came into this liking the no-index magic word scenario, but Relata may have a point. Maybe blanking is good enough. In my experience people are happy with it, and I mean very simple blanking, not even deletion, much less oversight. What they don't want is to be a hit in Google, they usually don't care one bit about our history.
I usually feel like for every n people that complain, a multiple of n stay silent, despite being wronged. That's why I would lean towards preemptive no-indexing for *some* pages. (AFD etc), but this is a slippery slope. The idea of blanking easily as the only solution is appealing also.
