It's not them voting "keep" that is a problem. Often people vote keep on topics that interest them merely because they want that topic in Wikipedia regardless of whether it's actually good for the encyclopedia. Still, as long as they provide sources as to why it should be kept, I don't see much of a problem either.
Sources substantiate the material in the article rather than the POV of whether or not it should be kept.
Saying that people are acting "regardless of whether it's actually good for the encyclopedia" imputes motives of recklessness to these people. In the case of a newbie, he may not even have had the opportunity to consider what "good for the encyclopedia" means. Entering a dialogue with them about that broader subject may be more constructive.
