Howdy,
The Readers web team at the Wikimedia Foundation is working on improving
the contribution features on the mobile website. [0] The team is working
on showing pages that are currently unavailable on mobile. We are starting
by designing improvements to the mobile navigation. We want your feedback
on the latest navigation prototype. If you have a moment, please visit the
project page and try out the demo on your mobile device. [1] Then help
answer a few questions about your experience.
Thank you!

Hi Everyone,
The next Wikimedia Research Showcase will be live-streamed Wednesday,
August 13 2018 at 11:30 AM (PDT) 18:30 UTC.
YouTube stream: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OGPMS4YGDMk
As usual, you can join the conversation on IRC at #wikimedia-research. And,
you can watch our past research showcases here.

Hope to see you there!
This month's presentations is:
*Quicksilver: Training an ML system to generate draft Wikipedia articles
and Wikidata entries simultaneously*
John Bohannon and Vedant Dharnidharka, Primer
The automatic generation and updating of Wikipedia articles is usually
approached as a multi-document summarization task: Given a set of source
documents containing information about an entity, summarize the entity.
Purely sequence-to-sequence neural models can pull that off, but getting
enough data to train them is a challenge. Wikipedia articles and their
reference documents can be used for training, as was recently done
<https://arxiv.org/abs/1801.10198> by a team at Google AI. But how do you
find new source documents for new entities? And besides having humans read
all of the source documents, how do you fact-check the output? What is
needed is a self-updating knowledge base that learns jointly with a
summarization model, keeping track of data provenance. Lucky for us, the
world’s most comprehensive public encyclopedia is tightly coupled with
Wikidata, the world’s most comprehensive public knowledge base. We have
built a system called Quicksilver uses them both.

Thanks for the announcement, Sarah. I'm forwarding this to the ENWP mailing

Subject: [Wiki-research-l] [Announcement] Voice and exit in a voluntary

Hi all,
With the start of the new fiscal year in Wikimedia Foundation on July
1, the Research team has officially started the work on Program 12:
Growing contributor diversity. [1] Here are a few
announcements/pointers about this program and the research and work
that will be going to it:
* We aim to keep the research documentation for this project on the
corresponding research page on meta. [2]
* Research tasks are hard to break down and track in task-tracking
systems. This being said, any task that we can break down and track
will be documented under the corresponding Epic task on Phabricator.
[3]
* The goals for this Program for July-September 2017 (Quarter 1) are
captured on MediaWiki. [4] (The Phabricator epic will be updated with
corresponding tasks as we start working on them.)
* Our three formal collaborators (cc-ed) will contribute to this
program: Jérôme Hergueux from ETH, Paul Seabright from TSE, and Bob
West from EPFL. We are thankful to these people who have agreed to
spend their time and expertise on this project in the coming year, and
to those of you who have already worked with us as we were shaping the
proposal for this project and are planning to continue your
contributions to this program. :)
* I act as the point of contact for this research in Wikimedia
Foundation. Please feel free to reach out to me (directly, if it
cannot be shared publicly) if you have comments/questions about the
project in the coming year.
Best,
Leila

This is a little overdue, but I wanted to work with comms to craft a blog
post that would help us do a bit of outreach around the announcement of the

For those of you with admin powers who don't read wikimedia-l or wikitech-l
- please switch on two-factor authentication, it's important.
I also wrote a blog post:

Remember when we got Tubgirl in the site notice in 2007? This is like that

Subject: [Wikitech-l] Update on WMF account compromises
To: wikitech-l(a)lists.wikimedia.org
Cc: wikimedia-l(a)lists.wikimedia.org
Since Friday, we've had a slow but steady stream of admin account
compromises on WMF projects. The hacker group OurMine has taken credit
for these compromises.
We're fairly sure now that their mode of operation involves searching
for target admins in previous user/password dumps published by other
hackers, such as the 2013 Adobe hack. They're not doing an online
brute force attack against WMF. For each target, they try one or two
passwords, and if those don't work, they go on to the next target.
Their success rate is maybe 10%.
When they compromise an account, they usually do a main page
defacement or similar, get blocked, and then move on to the next target.
Today, they compromised the account of a www.mediawiki.org admin, did
a main page defacement there, and then (presumably) used the same
password to log in to Gerrit. They took a screenshot, sent it to us,
but took no other action.
So, I don't think they are truly malicious -- I think they are doing
it for fun, fame, perhaps also for their stated goal of bringing
attention to poor password security.
Indications are that they are familiarising themselves with MediaWiki
and with our community. They probably plan on continuing to do this
for some time.
We're doing what we can to slow them down, but admins and other users
with privileged access also need to take some responsibility for the
security of their accounts. Specifically:
* If you're an admin, please enable two-factor authentication.
<https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/H:2FA>
* Please change your password, if you haven't already changed it in
the last week. Use a new password that is not used on any other site.
* Please do not share passwords across different WMF services, for
example, between the wikis and Gerrit.
(Cross-posted to wikitech-l and wikimedia-l, please copy/link
elsewhere as appropriate.)

Hey folks :)
We're starting concept work for automated list generation on Wikipedia and
the other Wikimedia projects based on queries to Wikidata. As a first step
I'd like to get a better understanding of the current state of things. For
this Jan (our UX person) and me would like to have a chat with a few
editors from different Wikipedias and other Wikimedia projects who are
maintaining list articles. If that is you or you know someone who fits
please let me know.
Cheers
Lydia
