Anyway, IP banning keeps vandals out of wikipedia. When one person from a consistant IP address keeps vandalizing pages, his IP address is banned by a sysop. After that, his computer can't go to wikipedia anymore, which he can get around by using a different computer, but more importantly, he is detered. In page protection, a sysop decides to protect a page from vandals by making it a protected page. After that, only another sysop can edit that page. An example of this is the home page, which, before it was protected, was frequently vandalized. In page deletion, a sysop decides that a page is worthless and that they don't want it there. The sysop deletes the page permenantly and then all records of the page are deleted from the server. LOL, not very likely to happen! Only good-natured, responsible people have become sysops so far. The type of user likely to indulge in a bar brawl such as you described either abstains from requesting admin rights, or is vetoed by others. We're actually a fairly well-behaved bunch here (a bunch of what, I won't say :) Uncle Ed

I added the following three users to the Administrator list: * LittleDan (Daniel Ehrenberg), as discussed here * Cordyph (Mirko Thiessen), as requested here * MyRedDice (Martin), as requested via Talk Page My "threat" to promote familiar old-timers was no more serious than Jimbo's "willy-nilly" thing, but I'm glad that it encouraged a couple of people to step up to the responsibility. However, the Wiki approach neatly eliminates the "Chinese whispers" problem. I was just over there looking at that. Has that address but all links seem to be back to www.wikipedia.org. Does it exist and what is it's status? You link to this from the link Suomi under other languages on the main page. Is it just a place holder, or a seed in Finland of a Finnish wikipedia. I ask as I journey every day to Finlind via Batmud and could juice this if it were a real thing. Fred
