A few of us met to discuss offline roadmaps and challenges today, and noting that no user gropu exists [and that other overviews of offline projects on Meta are a bit out of date] we started a user group. This is a very low-overhead group to provide a name for the network of all offline projects.

Great idea, SJ.
What thoughts do you (or anyone else) have about the rest of the offline pages? I love the idea of having something updated, but if the out of date content is still there and easy to find then it'll be confusing to others.

Perhaps we can use the old 2012 portal on meta but update it - At least with start and end dates for projects no longer running. Those are the most linked to from elsewhere.

Added a bit of information as well.
This page could probably be easily updated : https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Offline_Projects/Distribution
I think that one thing we could also easily do is to add a section related to media coverage (that could also include the series currently featured on WMF blog)
Main benefit : make this whole section a bit more appealing to non tech people with "easier" to read info about what is going on, why, how etc.

Hi everyone!
I'm very happy to announce that the Affiliations Committee has recognized [1] the Wikimedians for Offline Wikis User Group [2] as a Wikimedia User Group. The group aims to consolidate and support the development and deployment of offline snapshots of wiki knowledge in schools, clinics, and rural communities.
Please join me in congratulating the members of this new user group!
Regards, Kirill Lokshin Chair, Affiliations Committee
