Hi
10 years ago we have launched the Kiwix project to bring Wikipedia to
people with no or a bad access to Internet. Today, we are really proud
to see that we have achieved to do that, and even more.
All of this would not have been made possible without a committed team
of volunteers and the strong support of Wikimedia Switzerland. Thanks to
them (and a few other ones) we have achieved to:
* Make Wikipedia readable offline on (almost) all kind of devices
* Provide monthly updates of all Wikimedia projects
* Provide an open-source/standardised offline technology re-usable for
any kind of web content with openZIM
* Build offline versions of various projects like Gutenberg, TEDs,
Vikidia, Youtube, ...
With the additional help of dozens of partners, which spread content and
technology in the field, we can track around 1M of users a year... and
strongly believe this is the "tip of the iceberg".
Luckily, in the last 10 years, we have done a lot of progresses in the
Internet access. That said, around half of the world population still
does not have an access to Internet and censorship is a raising and
already extremely serious problem.
As a consequence, we will be pretty busy in the next decade and will
continue to improve our technology and offer always better solutions to
read and spread free knowledge - offline.
We have made a blog post about our anniversary on Wikimedia blog, please
share it on the social networks:

Wikimedia CH is looking for a HTML/Node.js/JavaScript/CSS contractor to help with Kiwix, the offline Wikipedia reader
The Kiwix project (http://code.kiwix.org/ <http://code.kiwix.org/>, http://www.kiwix.org <http://www.kiwix.org/>) is an offline reader for web content. Contents are stored into a local ZIM file that can be browsed later on.
Although Kiwix' main use is that of an offline Wikipedia reader, it also supports other kinds of content (other Wikimedia projects, Stackoverflow, TED talks, etc.)
The ZIM archive we currently generate from Wikimedia dumps is not very mobile-friendly. We need someone to modify the scrapper (https://github.com/kiwix/mwoffliner <https://github.com/kiwix/mwoffliner> in Node.js) so as subsequently to improve/preprocess the html/css/js content.A list of task can be found here:
* https://github.com/kiwix/mwoffliner <https://github.com/kiwix/mwoffliner>
* https://github.com/kiwix/kiwix/labels/be-mobile <https://github.com/kiwix/kiwix/labels/be-mobile>
This is a free (as in free speech) project, so a bit of experience with interacting with a community would be a plus. But any one can join.
If you're interested, please send an email to

Hi
Kiwix-plug is the Kiwix solution to easily get an offline Wifi Hotspot
full of knowledge. For USD 100 of hardware you can have the full
Wikipedia and hundreds of videos to spread wireless in a school, a camp
or a conference room. Everybody can then access to the information via
their own notebook or smart-phone.
And now, this is even easier to build this system. Take your
RaspberryPi3 SD card, copy the disk image on it, and your own Kiwix-plug
is ready. Here are the disk images freely available to download:
http://download.kiwix.org/plug/
For now we publish only disk images in Spanish and English but this is
only the first step, we will publish more soon. More documentation about
the Kiwix-plug can be found here:
http://wiki.kiwix.org/wiki/Kiwix-plug
Enjoy it!
