Hi,
as a member of the Linux Foundation I just received a newsletter which pointed me at an article on Linux.com concerning the Ben NanoNote.
I was very happy to find out that - beneath many other things in this detailed article - Vido was mentioned as Wikipedia reader.
Here is the article: http://www.linux.com/news/embedded-mobile/netbooks/296251:a-review-ben-nanon...
See the paragraph "Software": ... A wide variety of user applications are under development by the community, including some that lean towards embedded device usage (such as the Rockbox digital music player and Vido offline-Wikipedia reader) and some flashier options, such as Quake and Doom.
As always I have put a link to this article in our media section on our main page.
Thanks for your work!
/Manuel
Hi,
Perhaps you remember that I started working on porting the zimlib to Symbian and to implement a viewer using Qt some time ago.
The viewer is now called "WikiOnBoard". Source code and symbian install packages can be downloaded from http://wiki.github.com/cip/WikiOnBoard/
Instructions how to install and use it can be found there as well.
If you like, or don´t like this app, if it works fine or it you encounter problems, if you have any suggestions for new features or other feedback, I´d happy if you let me know. (Either on this mailing list or on the wikionboard web page.)
While currently only Symbian binaries are available it is pretty easy to port it other platforms which support Qt. So if you own an interesting device (in particular the N900 would make sense) and are willing to test, please let me know and I will try to build binaries for this devices.
I´d be happy to support you if you want to show the app at Linuxtag. A N900 (as Linux based) would be perfect if such a device is available and I can finish porting in time, but perhaps Symbian may be feasible as well. (Finally it is open source, although current hand sets use a pre-open source version). Please let me know if you are interested in some of these options.
Best regards, Christian
Wow, this is really great, that's what I have been waiting for so long!
I will make a link to your reader application on openzim.org.
Do we meet in Berlin next week? We definitely need some time to work on a few pages in our wiki, namely Download, How to make a ZIM file, ZIM File Archive to improve our readers experience.
Regards and thanks,
Manuel
Hi,
Do we meet in Berlin next week?
Unfortunately I cannot come to Berlin next week. However, I hope that I can join one of the future meetings. If any of the participants wants to present the WikiOnBoard App at LinuxTag I´d be happy to support him settings this up. He would just need a Symbian FP1 mobile phone. Alternatively Maemo (N900) could be used, but in difference to Symbian this cannot be done on short notice because I would need to setup the build environment.

Hi,
it's a pity that you can't come to LinuxTag, but you are definitely invited to our next meetings. Maybe you have time to come to Wikimania, July 9th - 11th in Gdansk. http://wikimania2010.wikimedia.org/wiki/Main_Page
Emmanuel, Tomasz and me are going there. Tomasz will give a talk about the Mobile projects and I will talk about ZIM, Emmanuel will participate in that workshop which we have merged with two other offline presentations. http://wikimania2010.wikimedia.org/wiki/Submissions/Wikipedia_Offline
We are currently very well in our budget because we have ommitted the 3rd Meeting that was planned for April and we have more money planned for LinuxTag than we need and we have also planned some money for Wikimania anyway. So if you need financial support please speak up. I think we should pay at least the accommodation for all openZIM team members. My accommodation should be paid by Wikimania as I am presenter and planning team member, so there should be left enough in our budget.
Concerning WikiOnBoard: I have installed the software on my Nokia E71 and downloaded the film.zim. The software works fine, but I see some usability issues: * "open file" dialog uses a virtual mouse, this is very bad to handle * fulltext search would be very nice * after following a link from one article to another the focus on the links when scrolling through the article disappears.

Hi Manuel,
Thanks for the invitation. I'll consider coming to Wikimania but cannot confirm definitely yet.
Thank you for your feedback to WikiOnBoard. The file dialog and the link selection issues should already be tracked in http://github.com/cip/WikiOnBoard/issues#issue/7 and http://github.com/cip/WikiOnBoard/issues#issue/3. Regarding, fulltext search, I am considering to add it. It should be pretty easy to do, but I am not fully convinced that is really that useful for mobile phones. However, I'll have a look into this.
Best regards, Christian
