I added you and Ævar to the project on Google Code, which can be used for more active development and experimental things that aren't quite ready and tested to go on the Wikimedia SVN. As development proceeds, we can then commit tested and stable versions of the development code to the Wikimedia SVN.
The issue tracker feature may also be useful to keep track of who's doing what and what features we want. If we can get development space like this on the map toolserver or somewhere else, that would be good but this works for now.
14:38:43 < JeLuF> avar: Why is this extension in google code and not in our SVN? I'll have a look at the delayed loading and make a patch for it.
Aude, don't be afraid to break MW extensions in svn, everything there is pretty much already broken anyway. You could add it to /extension/wikimaps and then we could merge it.
I think we should move this to MW svn ASAP, especially with the imminent deployment of the OSM Toolserver.
It would be nice to move the bugs to, which is waiting on https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=18391 for now.
Do you have MediaWiki SVN access? If not should I commit this? (and you should obviously get access).
I'm working on making a generic "map" class, and extending the class for different map types/sources (e.g. osm, world wind, or other types), and working with particular portions of the OpenLayers code. The delay loading works to load the JavaScript, only when a user requests a wiki page that has a map, though I think there is room for improving how this works.
Anyway, I can get the changes back into the MediaWiki svn in the next day or two. For me to continue committing unstable versions of code to Mediawiki svn, I would like the code to have version numbers. On the extension page, we should link to some "beta" (reasonably functional) version for people to download.
Another issue is to make sure Christian has MediaWiki svn commit access. I'm not sure of the status on getting him access.

Okey, good stuff.

Yes you can point them to some pseudo-stable stuff by SVN version ID I guess. But the important bit is that this gets into MW SVN and isn't hosted externally IMO. So others can hack it and just so that more people notice it, and so on:)
Anyway, good stuff, do it in your own time :)

Did he mail the wikitech list with a request et al?
Hi all,

I mailed Brion off-list a while ago but I understand he's busy / queuing the requests ;) We should probably decide on a wiki page to coordinate the remaining tasks currently listed at [1] - how about http://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Extension:WikiMaps? On a sidenote, my talks at Wikimania were accepted, so there's a goal to work towards.
Cheers,
Christian

Well I had a Maps component created in Bugzilla, so we could transfer the issues there: https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=18391
But having a wiki-page for the extension too would be nice. But issue tracking as-such would be best in bugzilla IMO.

Yeah I'm coming there too, no idea what to blather about exactly though :) But we'll work it out.
I'll be at Wikimania too, and suppose I'm responsible for helping organize our talks into panel/session on OSM. Ævar can talk about OSM specific stuff, and Christian can talk about integratings POIs and other geodata stuff from DBpedia.
I would talk about possibilities for integrating other thematic map types (w/o full zoom/pan options and all the tiles), pulling in data from http://www.data.gov and other such sources. Custom map types might be suited at first for the toolserver.
We also might do a workshop on how OSM works and how people can contribute to OSM. I was thinking possibly it could be a pre-conference workshop, the day before, but not totally sure when it would be. If we have enough time for the workshop and can get/borrow some GPS units, maybe we can go collect some data and then show people how to upload and process it, to get into OSM.

Yeah that's a great idea (which we've discussed before). We could probably get more contributors and the workshop format is much more open-ended and easier for everyone involved.
b.t.w. how's moving the extension to mediawiki svn going? need any help with that?
