During the wikimania 2009 I was following this work : http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/OpenLayers_Dynamic_POI for wikimania - openstreetmap collaboration
Please first check this url : http://osm.chamorro.com.ar/dpoi/ At this url you can see cassini localized tiles with info extracted from download.dbpedia.org dumps At low zoom levels we have a lot of info then we need to limit the info per tile. Now I use a random value but then I use anything else Limit it by category/subcategory/search keyword it's fine but I want to improve the system for a large number of points at this time. There are languages without tiles because I generate the index page from a list from dbpedia. Data are probably not correctly passed too This is a work in progress .
-- sorry for my poor English ---
I based my work on a minimal example . A more complex is here: http://www.freemap.sk/

Hello Jorge, nice work. Something that I want to do since a long time.
Please come to toolserver: https://wiki.toolserver.org/view/Account_approval_process
There you would have connection to the daily updated geocoordinate database from dispenser and connection to my database. Also categories would be available so you could perhaps rendering different icons for different types. See: http://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:WikiProjekt_Georeferenzierung/Wikiped... The old types are there: http://toolserver.org/~kolossos/wp-world/info-old.php It would looks much better. For international work we can try to use the Translatewiki.
For filtering you can use (like I) the page length of article or better the view counts from the squids from http://wikistics.falsikon.de/dumps.htm This datas are also in a database on toolserver. But I didn't find time until now to merge both datas.
Your way with the tiles seems to make it possible to handle the load of a lots of queries. This is necessary if we integrate maps into articles and allow it to show wikipedia labels on this maps.
Greetings Kolossos

New url :
http://toolserver.org/~chamorro/
You can put &debug=1 and get debug info. Next step, read the Kolossos databases
