Our talks at Wikimania

Hi there, it looks like our talks for Wikimania 2009 have been scheduled: http://wikimania2009.wikimedia.org/wiki/Schedule#Day_2 I won't be around for much of August so I'm trying to do all the work of working on software / my talk now before the end of July. So before that time I'd like to coordinate with you two (and other people?) how we're going to: * Do this pre-conference OSM workshop that we've signed up for * Split up our talks so that we make sure we don't have overlapping subjects and don't miss anything important. Basically what I'm interested in presenting for the latter is what I blathered about at the Wikimania hacking days: * A technical overview of how this OSM on Wikimedia thing works, i.e. Planet.osm -> Database -> Rendering -> Embedding in MediaWiki * Demos on using the extension for things I'm working on that'll (hopefully!) be finished at that time, e.g.: * Static map generation: https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=19654 * Multilingular map generation: https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=19668 (I'm going to do this by e.g. showing the West Bank in both Hebrew & Arabic) * Whatever else fits into that general criteria that I'm forgetting when writing this hurried e-mail For the latter it would be nice to: * Get in contact with that local Argentinian OpenStreetMapper/Wikipedian that someone mentioned and get him in on this * Find out what our audience will be, what are they likely to want? * Schedule some sort of outline for what we want to do .*I* can blather about GPS collecting -> editing -> map generation or whatever and answer questions, but it would be nice if we had something more focused than that :)

How should I generate static OSM maps for Wikimedia with the SlippyMap extension?

Hello there, long time no see:) In the last few days I've been working on the project of getting OpenStreetMap onto Wikimedia as outlined here: http://techblog.wikimedia.org/2009/04/openstreetmap-maps-will-be-added-to-w… Unfortunately I wasn't able to hack on it sooner (but of course other people have been working on it too!) and the project has been somewhat held up by the WM-DE servers being delayed. Anyway, one thing standing between us and world domination is rendering those static maps, I'm going to implement this but first I'd like to get comments on *how* we'd like to do it, so I've written a plan for doing it: http://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Extension:SlippyMap/Static_map_generation Would generating static images like that be fine for Wikimedia purposes or is this totally crazy? I think it would be just fine, but then again I did write the Cite extension so take that with a grain of salt:) And to spam a bit: if getting pretty OpenStreetMap maps deployed is something you'd like to happen sooner than later head over to our development page: http://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Extension:SlippyMap#Development I'm working off the Bugzilla tasklist which should be an approximate indication of stuff that needs to be done.

Status update on the OpenStreetMap -> Wikimedia project

The fun! project of getting OpenStreetMap maps deployed on Wikimedia servers (e.g. Wikipedia) is grinding forward at a healthy pace, here's the original announcement for those who have no idea what I'm talking about: http://techblog.wikimedia.org/2009/04/openstreetmap-maps-will-be-added-to-w… Unfortunately the project has been somewhat delayed by the Wikimedia.de servers mentioned in that posting taking a bit longer to arrive than expected (the DB server is still not up). I've personally had some much needed time to work on it recently, right now I'm hacking static map generation as outlined here: http://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Extension:SlippyMap/Static_map_generation (see the RFC at wikitech-l: http://lists.wikimedia.org/pipermail/wikitech-l/2009-July/044027.html) If you'd like to help here's the bug list I'm working on: http://tinyurl.com/nh62xy There are lots of tasks to be done. One very interesting task that I'm sure someone would be happy to work on is seeing how this setup scales to >200 languages or so: https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=19668 Ideally Wikimedia will have static map generation / a tileserver that'll render maps in the locale of the target wiki, so it'll e.g. use name:de tags for de.wikipedia.org.

SlippyMap code updated

The SlippyMap extension code has been updated on the MediaWiki svn. It's very much a work in progress, but the code is now split up into class files: * SlippyMap.class.php - a general slippy map class * SlippyMap.worldwind.php - extends the general slippymap class; this is still in development * SlippyMap.hooks.php - put the hooks here * SlippyMap.php - the main extension file; configuration options can be put here Other files: * SlippyMap.js * SlippyMap.css I'm also working on some special pages: * One is Special:MapServices - It's not ready to commit, but it allows configuration of what map types are allowed on a wiki, and which sources. For Wikipedia, it will be restrictive, probably just to our own OSM servers. For other, smaller wikis, one might like to include maps from other WMS sources. On one of my own projects, I have GeoServer and PostGIS setup, generating my own custom maps and want to include them in my own wikis. * Another could be Special:CreateMap to allow users to determine the map parameters (e.g. bounding box, center point, zoom level) and generate wiki code. Or this could be done as a popup window or some other implementation. I know there already is a "get wiki code" button on the SlippyMap, but that requires one to add a slippy map to the page, then zoom/pan around, get the wikicode via the button, then update the wikicode. I don't think that's the best approach. Also to be done is configuration of OpenLayers, to include just the JavaScript files that are needed for the particular map types we are using, rather than the entire OpenLayers code. Current DB status and static map generation

What's the current status of the DB server? I'm hacking the SlippyMap extension and it would be useful to work on one of the hard parts soon. I.e. how we want to generate a static map image from the database and having a working OSM -> OSM DB -> Mapnik DB -> Tileserver is required for that. We'll have to figure out what's the best way to do this. One option would be to merely use this: http://svn.openstreetmap.org/sites/tile.openstreetmap.org/cgi-bin/export It's very resource intensive to render like that but perhaps we can stick a cache in front of it (with an expiry of e.g. 1 week) and get away with it. Another option is to use something like this: http://dev.openstreetmap.org/~ojw/StaticMap/ That's a script that generates a static map by assembling tiles. It has some neat features like adding a marker to the final image which we might want to adopt. But we can use the cgi-bin/export script and just post-process its output to get the same results. But generating a lot of tiles *first* and then generating static map images is something I'm not at all convinced is a good idea. You'd have to deal with all sorts of uncomfortable cases like the tiles you want to use not existing at the moment you're generating the map. Besides, unlike OSM Wikimedia's primary application (at least for now) is going to be biased towards static maps as opposed to tiles. The opposite of what OSM itself is doing really. Note that we can use the cgi-bin/export script and just post-process its output to get the same results. Daniel suggested that perhaps we could just stick our generated maps in the thumbnail cache. This is a very interesting idea and something I'll have to look at further. It's simple, and we automatically have a per-project namespace so we can do per-project renderings, i.e. German tiles for dewiki, English for enwiki, as determined by name:CODE tags in the OSM DB. However we end up generating things we're going to have to cache them somehow, and do cache expiry. The latter being the hard part. I'm not at all convinced that coming up with some elaborate caching system that can automatically expire our generated tiles once the OSM data they're generated from changes, that would require all sorts of complexity. Instead it might be much easier just to assume that everything we generate can be put in the cache for a set amount of time, and after that period we'll have some method of automatically expiring everything. Geohack for OSM / DB-server / elevation map

Hello, *I added some lines to our geohack-script so that it can catch a page from OSM-Wiki if it get the parameter project=osm and give you back links to many osm-maps for your position. The new osm-geohack is in the moment integrated in the german and english old-geohack. Whats the actual schedule for Cassini (maps-toolserver)? *The new elevation map from the NASA sounds good. For hiking and biking maps we could really need a better resolution in some regions like Saxon Switzerland. But it seems really complicate to get the datas and we need to control that we have a compatible licences. Also the data volume is very huge, so perhaps it is better to make it later.
