All,
It is with a very heavy heart I share with you that Jose Hernandez has unexpectedly and suddenly passed away.
Winedale was an immeasurable part of Jose's life. His family asked that this news be shared with the community.
There will be memorial service details forthcoming. Please keep his family and friends in your thoughts.
Don Brode
I am sorry if I have not used the most up to date or comprehensive listservs or groups. Please reach out to me if I can amend. And please share with others from Winedale if you believe they may not be included here. Thank you very much.
This is terribly sad news, Don. I’m so sorry you’ve had to carry it to us. Jose seemed always ready to share the light he walked in.
If anyone knows how to reach Jose’s family so we can send cards, it would be much appreciated if you could share it.
Thank you.
Carpe Diem.
Love, Alice

You know a person's character by the way they treat their dogs, and Jose treated his like royalty, including his fat pit bull Tinkerbell. He made me laugh out loud and I’m filled with a deep sadness that he's gone. Jayne P.S. Didn’t he drag a mattress from one of the beds into the closet in ‘15? Voila. A room of his own.

What a blow this is. I've known Jose since "the beginning". We have been frolicking since 1988 or so when I met him in a Spring class. My admiration for his gusto and generosity on the stage was deep and abided when we finally were able to play together at the Reunions. He has been my comrade in keto, in showboating, and in calamitous amounts of late-night drinking. (But he had a special potion which he marketed for a while and which he claimed eliminated hangovers. It didn't.) He and Robert Stevens were my roommates in 2015 and I must correct the record: Jose was put in the closet because HE snored, not us. Also, as an index to his selflessness, he volunteered to go into the closet, he wasn't compelled, and the closet didn't really help.
Jose and I chatted regularly throughout the zoomdemic. I will miss our late-night quaffing and planning future playdates and hearing the music of his laughter and the sonority of his profounder emotions. I loved the man: our universe shrank a little when he left it. My heart goes out to all of you who were closer to him than I was. He loved you all so much.

As one who was privileged to have participated in a few if David and Jose's late-night (well, alright, all-night) seances, I can attest to everything he wrote in the second paragraph, and most of us know the truth of the first. In the last year and a half, Jose and I would get on text "benders", rambling on about the greatness of this or that great film or scene, until the other participants of the thread had to tell us to shut-up and we had to get our own personal thread. I still have it with David, but it's silent now.
Everything that reminds me of him, and there are so many things that trigger random memories, make me miss him so very much. This has been a sad, sad week, and it's only Tuesday.
Thank you, David, for the good words in his memory. He richly deserves them.
All my love,
John

What a blow this is. I've known Jose since "the beginning". We have been frolicking since 1988 or so when I met him in a Spring class. My
admiration
for his gusto and generosity on the stage was deep and abided when we finally were able to play together at the Reunions. He has been my
comrade
in keto, in showboating, and in calamitous amounts of late-night
drinking.
(But he had a special potion which he marketed for a while and which he claimed eliminated hangovers. It didn't.) He and Robert Stevens were my roommates in 2015 and I must correct the record: Jose was put in the
closet
because HE snored, not us. Also, as an index to his selflessness, he volunteered to go into the closet, he wasn't compelled, and the closet didn't really help.
Jose and I chatted regularly throughout the zoomdemic. I will miss our late-night quaffing and planning future playdates and hearing the music
of
his laughter and the sonority of his profounder emotions. I loved the
man:
our universe shrank a little when he left it. My heart goes out to all of you who were closer to him than I was. He loved you all so much.

Here is the link to Jose's obituary: https://www.greencremationtexas.com/obit/jose-angel-hernandez/
A memorial mass is happening tomorrow morning in Austin and the family is planning a celebration of life sometime later this spring.
I added to the recipient list above incase we missed telling anyone in the Winedale community. I'm sorry if this is the first time you are seeing this sad news.

I’m heartbroken. Jose has always been such an inspiration to me. His love for his Winedale friends was so deep and passionate and joyful. I wasn’t ever out there for a whole summer with him, but he had a gift for making us all feel like family. When I was lucky enough to be around him out at Winedale, during a reunion or some other gathering over the years, he always had this glow about him, a giddy expression on his face that said, “Aren’t we so lucky to be out here together, doing this…!!!?” I was so touched by how he spoke up with emotion in his voice during the 2020 reunion zoom celebration, after we all watched the “Winter’s Tale” film, to express his concern about the health of Mark Bouler, who was then having some heart issues (he’s doing fine now). Jose said, “Mark’s a great guy.” Jose, you were a great guy too. I wish I’d told you that then. And so funny and fun to be around. And so generous.
I think of his great story of inviting Doc to play on his softball team, and the email he sent us the week after the 2015 reunion, riffing on memories of late-night yakking and singing sessions at Festival Hill, where two pesky cats had patrolled the big hanging-out area: “I dreamt that I opened my suitcase and both of those goddamned cats jumped out. just wanted y’all to know I’ve started sleeping in my closet here at home…"
I found this photo from the ’95 reunion “Midsummer” when I was going through a box of Winedale pictures a while back — was so glad to find it. Such a fun and unforgettable performance.

Jose ended his 2015 post-reunion email with these words, and I can hear him saying this (and singing it) to all of us —
convert all your sounds of woe, into hey nonny nonny!!
So hard to do right now but I know these photos and memories of Jose will always lift my heart.
Love to all of you, and thank you, Don —

Clayton, thank you so much for writing down this lovely cry from the heart. It’s something to cling to for both his closest Winedale friends and the admirers who wish to have known him better but can be glad to have known him at all.

Thanks for sharing this hard news. I'll always remember the great joy Jose created and shared with his Grumio and the good times we shared in Austin after Winedale. When he was joyful it was always effectively infectious. My life was better through knowing him.

Oh, this is sad news. I only just got to know Jose at the last reunion, and what fun it was to play with him. He radiated. Delight. Joy. Love. And what a lovely voice.
Thank you, Don, and thanks to everyone for these recollections. I am so sorry not to have a reprise reunion with Jose, sorry for his family, and for everyone feeling his loss today.

I am so sad to hear this news. I didn't know Jose well before the 2015 reunion, although we were together in that 1995 Midsummer. I was a punk fairy, too! I loved his generous spirit, humor, and willingness to help out in so many ways. I can hear him singing, too, Clayton! Hey Nonny Nonny, indeed. My condolences to all of you who knew and loved him, and to his family.
