Hi Friends,
The Theatre Barn at Winedale has four vintage lanterns that I'm sure you will recognize. Two are in the front and two are in the back. Two of the four glass chimneys are broken. Rather than replace the fixtures, I would love to track down some replacement glass chimneys. They are an unusual size. The glass chimney says "Artolier Corp." in cursive writing at the top of the glass. It is approximately 9" tall with a fitted top of 4.5" and a fitted bottom of 5". Below I've pasted pics and links of ones I've found online, but these have already been sold. Are any Shakespeare sleuths or antique pickers out there willing to join me in this search? If we could find them, I believe Winedale Historical Center would reimburse us for the cost. [image: Screenshot 2024-03-11 at 9.33.03 PM.png]

Hi Madge -
There is a fantastic lamp store on Burnet Road that also has an excellent restoration crew. I will drop by there, and see what they could do for us, or see if they have suggestions.
Thanks, Laurel

I did some poking around on various websites when this notice came across, and I found myself coming up with results similar to Madge's. This led me to wonder (a) if a good solution might be to find four matching lanterns of similar vintage and materials--possibly from Artolier--and (b) would four lanterns of this sort be sufficiently authentic?

Thank you all so much for your responses and help. Laurel, that is a great idea to check in with that store on Burnet. Thank you for offering. Leigh, I'm so glad you found a place that makes custom chimneys, a great fallback if it comes to that. Heather, that shape does look right...I will order one of those Dietz Globes to see if it works. Terry, I'm excited you are working on a cabaret and will take to online sleuthing after. Kathy, Idalia, and Emily thank you for joining the hunt. I think it would be really cool if we find not just a suitable replacement, but two of the actual Artolier globes. Mike, I think I'd like to find replacement globes, if possible, first before looking to replace the lanterns. There's no rush. But you bring up an interesting point, though, about replacement lanterns. My understanding is that the Theatre Barn is not held to the same historical standards as other buildings on the property. I don't quite understand why, but I am interested in learning more and will share once I do. I just love the look of these lanterns and they do work...they just need some TLC and some missing parts.
Apparently, Winedale was rented out for a wedding at some point, and that is when the globes on the back two lanterns were broken. So rest easy that it was not Sh@W folks that did the breaking.
Thank you all for joining in!
On the list soon is updating the Welcome sign. That was given to Doc from the class of 1994. Doc and the class built the berm and set the posts and Susan Todd's sign shop did the work on the sign. Susan, I'll be looking to you for advice on how best to refurbish the sign. Does anyone know about the rose bush that grows behind the sign? That came later. I'm wondering if there's a story connected to that rose bush.
More soon! Madge

The rose bush was sourced and planted by the father of a 2008 summer student. It is a type of rose that grows in the garden at the Shakespeare Birthplace in Stratford.

There is a fantastic lamp store on Burnet Road that also has an excellent restoration crew. I will drop by there, and see what they could do for us, or see if they have suggestions.
Thanks, Laurel

Hi Friends,
The Theatre Barn at Winedale has four vintage lanterns that I'm sure you will recognize.

Hi, all! Madge, I believe Sarah Bayne planted that rose bush! Spring ‘03 with Doc, summer ‘03 and ‘05 with James. Planted and cultivated it either summer 03 or 05 (I think!!)

More soon! Madge

Hi all - Doc I am sure you did plant the first rose bush there! I remember there being one there my first summer. But by 2007, it was gone. I don't know if it was the weather or an overly zealous groundskeeper. I have attached a picture of the lonely sign from 2007.
We did The Merchant of Venice that summer, and Katy Rawson was playing Portia. Her Dad came to see every performance. He didn’t “plan” to see every performance, but would always turn up eventually, with a sheepish look on his face, having arrived late with no reservation.
One time, he walked up with a plant in his arms. He bought the rose to honor his daughter Katy, and to thank S@W for giving his family such a beautiful summer. He asked if we could plant it behind the sign, and Sarah did. She's a great gardener, and kept it watered and fed for years, even after she was no longer the program coordinator! It has become so hearty that we now have to prune it back each summer.

Hi Friends,
The Theatre Barn at Winedale has four vintage lanterns that I'm sure you will recognize.

Hi all - I went to the lamp store and talked to the owner. She looked the lamps up in her database of all things lamp-related and thinks we will probably need to get the chimneys made (ugh). I say we keep looking. Here is the store info, in case anyone is interested. Lots of cool antique lamps and sconces.

Dear all, I wouldn't have the first idea about locating an antique lantern or a replacement chimney, but I do know loving teamwork when I see it, and I have to say what pleasure I've taken from these exchanges, all of you helping one another as Winedale taught us to do. Go, Madge.

More soon! Madge

I did some poking around on various websites when this notice came across, and I found myself coming up with results similar to Madge's. Hi Madge -
There is a fantastic lamp store on Burnet Road that also has an excellent restoration crew. I will drop by there, and see what they could do for us, or see if they have suggestions.
Thanks, Laurel

Hi Friends,
The Theatre Barn at Winedale has four vintage lanterns that I'm sure you will recognize.

Hi, friends!
Do we know if there are any photos from the Winedale Knight of the Burning Pestle that are shareable on here? What year was that? 1980s? KOBP and Shoemaker’s Holiday were the first non-Shakespeare plays out at Winedale once y’all started doing full plays, is that right? Or no?
I’m writing a chapter dedicated to KOBP for my book on citizenship with Arden/Bloomsbury press and I’ve already given a talk based on my work using pics from the ASC Blackfriars production. I’d love to incorporate/celebrate some images from Winedale as well in future presentations!
Doc, how did y’all stage the citizen and wife when they say they’ll sit down on stage? Did you use benches on stage?
Cheers, all! Casey
Hi Casey,
*Knight of the Burning Pestle* was in 1996. And *Shoemaker's Holiday* was in 1989. I was Firk in Shoemaker's..."I'll firk you if you do!" was one my best lines. I was there for both. I think I can scare up some images.
Doc might remember differently, but as I recall we put the Citizen and his wife in the balcony audience.

To the best of my memory, Bob and Courtney (and Daryl as Rafe) started in the audience balcony, but when the grocer rushes the stage, and his "Coney" joined him, they forced the sign boy (played by Madge's nephew) to get them a stool so they could sit on the stage balcony.
So sayeth Merrythought.

As a footnote in the book of Winedale lore related to “Knight of the Burning Pestle”: In the fall of 1984 a group of Winedalers from the early ‘80s classes – along with some of their friends from the worlds of Austin music and theater – came together to work on a production of the play, with evening sessions spent playing on the little stage in Calhoun 100. I seem to recall that there was no director; it was to be ensemble-led. The cast list, courtesy of the Steve Price archives:

I have fond memories of James’s sweet and winning Rafe… Mark and Elise were as funny as you would imagine… I remember Steve’s exuberant Merrythought… Sadly the warning at the bottom of the sheet – “Opening night is sooner than you think” – did not prove true. Opening night never came; the company dissolved a few weeks into rehearsals after a few key players left for various reasons and no one had the extra time that semester to plug the gaps and rebuild momentum. I remember a somber final meeting in Calhoun Hall, with all of us sitting around on benches and on the floor outside Doc’s basement office, as the group decided to let the idea go.
It still gives many of us a pang that we never had a chance to see this Winedale-inspired “Pestle” in its full potential glory… What a cast list!

Amazing story about the KOBP that wasn't. Love that cast list! Thanks for that, Clayton.
Here's a memory I have from the 1996 KOBP at Winedale: Jon Watson was originally going to be out there in 1996 but had to opt out because of back surgery and Michael Mergen replaced him as Merrythought. Jon gave us a setting or two for some of the songs in the play. A spirited one that starts, "Sing, now, before the hour of dying" is one of my all-time favs. But there were many more little songs, and I remember Doc suggested we add even more songs to the play. One afternoon, the class divided into groups, and we all went off to devise tunes for the songs. We said you could use an existing tune or make one up. I had a little ditty in my head from seeing the Mozart opera *Abduction from the Seraglio*. So our little group set words to it.
In the last week of the summer, Brett Youens made a beautiful gift for Jeff Liaw: a transcription of all the music from the summer. After transcribing that piece, Brett came running out of the parlor looking for me, saying, "Madge, did you write this?" He went on and on about the amazing structure of the tune and how it sounded simple but was really genius. I enjoyed letting him think I was the composer for a bit and then revealed Mozart, not me, had written it. Here's the tune if you'd like to listen: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bMdA_BEFhKk.
Sadly, I haven't found any pics yet, Casey, but I will continue the search!
Best, Madge

Madge may remember that I set the words of "Der Vas Ein Boer Von Gelderland" (she and I sang it as a duet in "The Shoemaker's Holiday") to the tune of "Sumer Is Icumen In."

What a wonderful group of people engaged in what could have been a wonderful production. I knew most everyone on that list at the time and would have dearly loved to have seen them all playing together in that world.
Such a long time ago that was … long enough that all those phone numbers listed by the cast members' names were for landlines.

Parallel universes must be a real thing, because it's the only explanation I can think of for why my name was on the stellar cast list for "Knight of the Burning Pestle" in 1984, but I don't recall being involved in the production or - I'm embarrassed to admit - having even read the play. Ah, but I did notice the absence of the letter "e" on my last name in the cast list. Obviously, some other dude, named Dave Sharp, was playing the "tapster." Boy, the temerity and nerve of him! He should be arrested.

I checked in with a non-Winedale-alum who's listed as a cast member, and neither of us remembers an actual performance of Burning Pestle, although we both vaguely remember some kind of big meetup in Calhoun 200 (or was it 100? it was the big lecture hall, at any rate) with a lot of the faces listed on the cast sheet. (I have clearer memories of Doc giving the Spring 1979 class the play early on, and of us--including me and another person on this cast list--not knowing what to do with it, despite which several of us Spring Class members went on to join the 1979 summer class.)
I think it was brainstormed but didn't come together. At any rate I'd have loved playing Humphrey.

What a wonderful group of people engaged in what could have been a wonderful production. I knew most everyone on that list at the time and would have dearly loved to have seen them all playing together in that world.
Such a long time ago that was … long enough that all those phone numbers listed by the cast members' names were for landlines.

Best,
cs

Casey

Madge, thanks for the info, that’s helpful! Also, I directed Shoemaker’s for my MFA production at the Blackfriars with Bob Jones as Simon Eyre! Firk is a great four-letter word character, wish I could have seen that.
I also wish I could have seen James as Rafe (and the rest of you) in that short lived KOBP!! Thanks for sharing that that, Clayton! I wonder if any of those phone numbers are still attached to the locations they were in 1984…
Cheers, Casey
