Wiki Loves Monuments in the US - Info, promoting, jury, & more

Hi all, Nikikana and I are thrilled to be organizing Wiki Loves Monuments in the United States again for the second year in a row. The event officially kicks off September 1st, at 4 AM UTC / 12 AM EST / 9 PM PST. Last year's event brought in over 11,000 photos (6th in the world) from over 1,700 individuals (1st in the world), and we hope to see great numbers like these again for 2017 - and we need your help! We want your state represented :) If you are part of a Wikimedia affiliate, please promote the event on your social media and network. If you have contacts at historical societies, museums, etc., consider contacting them to see if they would be interested in sharing the event with their own networks, social media accounts, etc. * We have created guides to finding monuments for each state and most territories: < https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:Wiki_Loves_Monuments_2017_in_the…>. While each state guide contains links to NRHP lists, most could use some help with links to state and local lists of historical sites. Feel free to expand your state's guide. * We need jurors! Our judging process takes place over several weeks in October, and we'd love to have Wikimedians involved. As a thank-you for this year, all our judges will be receiving a WLM US t-shirt after the event. These crawls are a fantastic opportunity for conference attendees to experience the local culture, as well as collaborate with local institutions to improve Wikipedia. At the BAnQ, we plan to have an edit-a-thon, where Wikimedians utilize the Archive's resources to improve Wikipedia's coverage of Montreal's people - and ending with an evening reception. WikiConference North America: Save the Date! (Submissions Open)

We are pleased to announce that *WikiConference North America 2017* will be held in Montreal on Wednesday and Thursday, August 9-10th as a pre-conference to Wikimania (Friday-Sunday August 11-13th). More details available at https://wikiconference.org/ Submissions open at https://wikiconference.org/wiki/2017/Submissions With so much momentum and infrastructure built around Wikimania Montreal, we see this as a great opportunity to host WNCA in Canada as a pre-conference to Wikimania as a confirmation of our commitment to representing all of North America. Programming We have an exciting program developing: - Wednesday, August 9th: Culture Crawl, which was our popular kick-off conference event in San Diego at Balboa Park in 2016, is back, this time at various cultural institutions in Montreal. We’ll focus on galleries, libraries, archives, museums, and monuments. There will probably a reception this evening at one of the GLAM institutions; stay tuned. - Thursday, August 10th: This day will be full of programming, with a keynote, tracks, and lightning talks. The official Wikimania kick-off reception will be held this evening at the conference venue, Le Centre Sheraton Montreal. Submissions Submissions for lectures, presentations, panels, and so on are now open. Learn more on our website: https://wikiconference.org/wiki/2017/Submissions If you are presenting at Wikimania 2017, but would also like to present at WikiConference North America, we still encourage you to submit a proposal; there will be many concurrent tracks at Wikimania, and presenting twice will allow you to reach more people who may otherwise miss out on your presentation. Scholarships There is no grant for WCNA 2017 and no scholarships available. All attendees will have to make their own financial arrangements to attend. While we did have an option to cancel WCNA 2017, it didn’t make sense to do so when we have a venue available in Canada. Registration Registration for WNCA 2017 will be hosted through Wikimania’s registration system as a pre-conference. Upon registration, you will be given access to book accommodations at reduced rates, which have been coordinated by the Wikimania organizing team. - Registration, either in advance or the day of, is mandatory. Registration includes a lanyard and name badge. - There is no charge to attend WCNA Day1, Culture Crawl, on August 9th. - The cost to attend WCNA Day2, on August 10th, is US$35.00. This includes lunch and snacks throughout the day, and is the same cost for the WCNA preconference as well as other preconferences (WikiMed, WikiEdu, Hackathon, etc.). Stay tuned! Wikimedia District of Columbia: New Institutional Partnerships Manager

Wikimedia District of Columbia is pleased to announce the hiring of our first employee. Ariel Cetrone has joined WMDC as our Institutional Partnerships Manager, where she will plan and facilitate events with our many institutional partners, including cultural, academic, and professional organizations. Her work will help expand our outreach role in DC and surrounding states and maximize the effectiveness of our volunteer time and energy. A native of Philadelphia, Cetrone is a graduate of George Washington University and Drexel University. She previously worked for Historic RittenhouseTown, a Philadelphia nonprofit organization and historic site, and the DC Commission on the Arts and Humanities.
