Hello colleagues,
This afternoon, Cascadia Wikimedians User Group had our annual meeting at
the University of Washington in Seattle. Meeting notes (not yet finalized)
are available at
http://cascadia.wiki/Workroom/Meeting_minutes/December_17,_2016.

Acting Secretary
Hello US Wikimedians,
Here is a link to the Doodle poll to help us schedule this month's
Wikimedia United States Coalition meeting:
http://doodle.com/poll/kgy38bftyekrwg6h
You are welcome to add items to the meeting agenda at
https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/WALRUS/November_2016#Agenda
Please note that:
* Thanksgiving Day is November 24th. Mindful of the high proportion of US
residents who have Thanksgiving celebrations, I omitted November 24th from
the list of options for this month's meeting.
* One of the agenda items for our November meeting will be to discuss
whether to have a December meeting, keeping in mind that many people take
time away from their regular activities in late December and early January.
If we decide not to meet in December, then this November meeting will be
our last for 2016 and the next meeting will be scheduled in January 2017.
Regards,
Pine

Subject: [Wikimedia-l] Recognition of WikiConference North America
To: Wikimedia Mailing List <wikimedia-l(a)lists.wikimedia.org>
Dear all,
I am pleased to announce the recognition of another Wikimedia User Group,
this time based in the USA: WikiConference North America [1]
At the end of WikiConference North America 2016, celebrated last month in
San Diego, the organizing team announced the creation of a permanent group
that will focus on the planning and hosting of WikiConference North America
in future years, as well as documenting best practices and experiences
learned with other affiliates planning and hosting conferences and similar
events. And some outreach, too :-)
Welcome!

Hello everyone,
I'm very pleased to announce that Kelly Doyle and Rosie
Stephenson-Goodknight have joined the Wikimedia DC Board of Directors.
I'm sure that most of you already know Kelly and Rosie; for anyone who
doesn't, Kelly currently serves as the Wikipedian in Residence for Gender
Equity at West Virginia University Libraries, while Rosie is a co-founder
of WikiProject Women in Red and the WikiWomen's User Group, among many
other projects.
Please join me in congratulating them on their new roles!
Cheers,
Kirill

Subject: [Talk-us] Elections coming up!
To: OSM US Talk <talk-us(a)openstreetmap.org>
Hi all,
The current board (Alyssa Wright, Drishtie Patel, Alex Barth, Ian Dees and
me, Martijn van Exel) is about to end its term, and elections are called
for! These will happen in the second half of November.
You should consider becoming a candidate! Anyone who is a member of the US
chapter can be a board member as well. If you would like to know more about
our work as a board and what is involved in the board work, join our town
hall on November 7 at 8pm Eastern time / 7pm central time / 6pm Mountain
time / 5pm Pacific time / 2pm Hawaii time. A link and more info will follow
shortly!
If you are already sure you will be a candidate (yay!) you can add your
name to the wiki: https://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/
Foundation/Local_Chapters/United_States/Elections/2016. You should also
come up with a position statement, which does not have to be long but it
should convince the membership that they should vote for you!
Only members can vote and be a candidate, if you want to become a member,
please head over to https://openstreetmap.us/join/ and sign up now. Thanks!
If you don't know if you are a member, email us at
membership(a)openstreetmap.us and we will find out for you.
We all hope you will participate in this election!
Martijn & the OSM US board.

Subject: [Wiki-research-l] Research project - Challenges for Wikipedia
projects in Latin American indigenous langauges
To: wiki-research-l(a)lists.wikimedia.org
Hello -
My name is Eddie Avila and I’m with the organization Global Voices. I’ve
been lurking for the past couple of months getting a feel of different
experiences in research around Wikimedia-related topics.
We were recently awarded a Project Grant from the Wikimedia Foundation to
conduct a research project examining the current state of active and
incubator Wikipedias in indigenous languages of Latin America with a
special focus on identifying ongoing challenges for native-speaking editors
and the demand for this content in their communities.
I believe some members of this list provided some feedback on the proposal,
which was greatly appreciated. The project is still a work in progress and
the final, refined proposal will be added to the original proposal. We are
looking forward to adding the Lead Researcher to the team to help us better
define the parameters and design the methodology.
Anyway, we recently published a call for applications (it is in Spanish
because of the language requirement associated with the position), but if
you or someone you might know would be interested in applying, please send
them this link. Deadline is next Friday, Nov. 4.

Looking forward to providing updates along the way.
Thanks,
Eddie
