It looks like nothing has been set up on Meta for tonight's meeting, and I
don't have access to the WMNYC or WMDC Zoom accounts, but I plan to be
available this evening. If nothing else happens, I'll set up a Zoom link
from my personal account and I'll host the meeting, starting at 6 PM
Pacific / 9 PM Eastern.
My main hope for this evening is to get an update about the preparations
for WikiConference North America, if any of the organizers are able to
participate.
Regards,
Pine

Hi folks,
As you may have seen, Wiki Loves Monuments is back in the United States for
2018 and runs through the end of September:
https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:Wiki_Loves_Monuments_2018_in_the…
Wiki Loves Monuments is an annual international photo competition where
participants upload their photos of registered historical and cultural
sites to the Wikimedia Commons. This year, over 50 countries are
participating.
In the United States, this means capturing photos of sites listed on the
National Register of Historical Places, as well as sites recognized by
state historical societies and other local historical institutions. It's a
very successful event; last year in the United States, we had over 1,400
participants upload over 8,000 photos, with a good chunk of them (10-15%)
being used across Wikimedia projects. So far in 2018, we're almost at 1,000
photos.
Wiki Loves Monuments can be a fun activity for people who enjoy
photography, exploring, and learning about their local history. I encourage
everyone to get involved, and there are several ways of doing so:
* Spread the word on your affiliates' social media channels.
* Encourage your local historical societies, libraries, universities, etc.
to spread the word as well (if you do, please contact me so we don't
duplicate outreach efforts)
* Improve your state's local guide for Wiki Loves Monuments; see
https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:Wiki_Loves_Monuments_2018_in_the…
* Participate yourself! More details on how to participate and how to find
locations to photograph are available on our event page.

Don't hesitate to reach out to me with any questions, ideas, etc. Thank you!

Wikimedia District of Columbia is proud to be the recipient of $50,000 in
support from the Knight Prototype Fund, an initiative of the John S. and
James L. Knight Foundation. Wikimedia DC will collaborate with the
Smithsonian Institution on a project called the "Wiki Art Depiction
Explorer", an effort to create an interface for museum visitors and other
art enthusiasts to crowdsource metadata about visual depictions in museum
artworks. Making this data more accurate and robust will allow further and
deeper discovery of these works by anyone in the world.
The project was created by three longtime Wikimedia DC volunteers: Andrew
Lih, author of The Wikipedia Revolution, Effie Kapsalis, Chief of Content &
Communications Strategy at the Smithsonian Institution Archives, and Robert
Fernandez, member of the board of directors of Wikimedia DC. Andrew Lih
is currently in South Africa for Wikimania and looks forward to talking to
other Wikimedia volunteers about this project.
The aim of the Knight Prototype Fund is to support the development of
innovative ideas to use technology to engage people with the arts and
cultural institutions. The John S. and James L. Knight Foundation has
previously supported organizations and projects related to Wikimedia,
including the Wikimedia Foundation.
