Subject: [Wikimedia-PA] Fwd: KaiOS phone users can now experience Wikipedia
through a dedicated app!

Hi everyone,
My name is Angie and I work on the Inuka Team at the Wikimedia Foundation
(formerly the "New Readers" team). [1]
I wanted to share that there is now an additional way to browse Wikipedia
in India. As of a few weeks ago, there is a Wikipedia app available on
KaiOS in India, which is provided through Jiophones [2]. Jiophone users can
download and install the Wikipedia app on the JioStore. As of early
October, there have been over 1 million downloads.
This first release is focused on how to make it easier to read Wikipedia on
a phone that does not have a touch screen. The platform supports over 100
languages for reading, and we appreciate that volunteers have fully
translated the Wikipedia app user interface into several Indian languages
already. The app will continue to have updates and reach more countries
over time.
If you (or someone you know) own a Jiophone, please give the app a try by
downloading it from the JioStore. We would like to hear about your
experience with it. Let us know about issues or bugs through the in-app
feedback feature, through the project talk page [3], or through Phabricator
[4].
To enable the app to reach readers in even more Indian languages, we would
greatly appreciate additional translations of the user interface on
Translatewiki.net [5].
To know more about the app and our work, and why we believe this project is
so important to help us reach new users, you can see the main page for the
app [6] and the Questions and Answers page [7]. We welcome your comments,
suggestions, and feedback on the related talk page [3].
Lastly, please, do share this message on other venues of interest for your
fellow community members in India.
Kind regards,
Angie

Hello,
Hope you all are doing well. Today we all of us have received a mail that
''As you know, WikiProject India is celebrating the 8th birthday of
Wikidata this October and on this occasion, CIS-A2K will be sending
Wikidata special merchandise to all Indian affiliates and communities upon
request as well as active Wikidata contributors residing in India.
Affiliates and Communities
Please note,
All Indian affiliates are welcome to request for Wikidata special
merchandise and/or infrastructure. There is no need for community
notification. But, affiliate contacts or board members or executive
committee members or people in similar positions, who can represent the
affiliate, need to do the request.
All Indian language communities, except those who have geographical
affiliates, are welcome to request for Wikidata special merchandise
requests. But, the community should decide on-wiki and have clear consensus
to whom the merchandise will be sent.
Indian language communities having geographical affiliates are requested to
discuss any need with their respective affiliates first and ask them to
request them on their behalf.
Only one request for each affiliate or language community will be accepted.
It is expected that the requests for merchandise and/or infrastructure
should be practical enough to be used by community members and within the
budget of *maximum INR 10,000* for each affiliates.
CIS-A2K will not design for the merchandise. If any custom design is
preferred, the affiliate or the community should upload it to Wikimedia
Commons as svg format and send the link to CIS-A2K, which will be taken
care of, while printing it. The design should be Wikidata specific only.
If this sounds interesting, please feel free to request here -
https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Wikidata:Eighth_Birthday/India#Affiliates_and…
''
Here is the right time for us to grab this opportunity. What do you think?
Can we plan some innovative ideas? I request you all to provide some of
your thoughts so that our community can take benefits from CIS-A2k. It can
be list of books which the community can buy for further use or it can be
merchandise like t.shirt or mementos etc. Hence, feel free to share your
ideas at the earliest.

Uploaders now don't have to worry about the monument ID if they directly upload from our list. This module can also be adapted by other participating countries which have migrated all their data to Wikidata and/or having multiple campaigns. We have included the module and necessary templates in our wlm-in campaign. Thanks a lot, Krishna and Zache.

Subject: [Wikidata] Announcing two new WikiCite grant programs: Project &
events, and e-scholarships
To: wikicite-discuss <wikicite-discuss(a)wikimedia.org>, <
wikidata(a)lists.wikimedia.org>, <wikimedia-l(a)lists.wikimedia.org>
Dear all,
I have the great pleasure to announce two new grant programs for projects
that support the goals of WikiCite: the promotion open citations and linked
bibliographic data to serve free knowledge.
The steering committee is now accepting applications for the following two
types of grants. For both types the application deadline is 1 October 2020,
and all projects must be completed by 1 May 2021.
--- Project & Event grants ---
Grants between $2,000 and $10,000 (USD equivalent) are available to
individuals, groups, and organisations with a project that supports the
goals of Wikicite.
All the details, the eligibility criteria (especially for in-person
events[1]), and the application form are available on the WikiCite project
& event grants homepage:
https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/WikiCite/grants
Individuals, groups, and organizations may apply, and projects may be of
any nature. This includes technical (e.g. software, tools), event (online,
or in-person), resources (training materials, documentation), or other
forms not mentioned – as long as it supports the goals of WikiCite.
--- e-Scholarships ---
The e-scholarship program is a new kind of grant in Wikimedia, created in
response to an era of COVID-19 quarantines, and the 2030 Movement strategy
goals.
An e-scholarship provides a per-diem equivalent allowance for 1-5 people to
stay at their home(s) and work for 2-4 days on a project supporting the
mission of WikiCite. e-scholarship recipients' projects can be the kinds of
things they might have previously undertaken with a scholarship for an
in-person hackathon, unconference, or research trip, for example.
All the details, eligibility criteria, program design principles, and the
application form are available on the WikiCite e-scholarships homepage:
https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/WikiCite/e-scholarship
Funding will:
- be provided in advance;
- be calculated at the WMF per-diem rate for the city where the
e-scholarship recipient lives;
- and (as it is a living allowance) not require recipients to submit
expense reports.
"Remote group" applications are encouraged, as are projects which focus on
content or communities which are historically underrepresented in Wikimedia
projects. Building a bot, fixing a tool, wrangling a dataset, writing
complete documentation... all are valid e-scholarship projects. A
confirmation letter (in advance) and/or participation certificate
(afterwards) can also be provided.

[1] Applications for in-person events are eligible. The WMF will release a
risk assessment calculator for in-person events and a checklist of
precautions in early September. This protocol will apply to all Wikimedia
Foundation supported events. Applicants may publish a draft of their
proposals now, and edit it before the submission deadline to include a copy
of the results from the risk assessment protocol once it is published.
