Hello Cascadia Wikimedians,
I am forwarding this on behalf of Elisa Law from the Washington State
Historical Society.
Of note is the Edits for Women 2020 Event, which is five joint edit-a-thons
that the Comcast Women's Network plans for Fri March 27, 2020 - 9am to 4pm,
at Seattle, Fife, Puyallup, Shoreline, & Spokane. Support for some of these
will be remote, possibly via Zoom.
I am hoping that we will start with an introduction to editing Wikipedia
presented simultaneously to each of the five locations.
If any Wikimedians are available to help in any capacity for any length of
time during these edit-a-thons, on site or remotely, please contact me.
Yours,

Subject: [Wikimedia Summit 2020] Update on program and timeline – next
steps towards the Wikimedia Summit
Date: Thu, 20 Feb 2020 15:10:09 +0100
From: Cornelius Kibelka (via wmsummit-list Mailing List)

Hey all,
Week by week, we are coming closer to the Wikimedia Summit – and you
might ask: What can I do to prepare myself for the event? What are the
next steps towards the event? What will we do at the Wikimedia Summit?
I’ll try to give you a compact overview and answers to these questions.
Timeline:
*
Compared to previous years, we are a bit less communicating from the
organizers’ side at the moment, because we would like you to focus
on the ongoing Community Conversations around the movement strategy
recommendations. Feedback is collected from across online
communities, affiliates and the WMF until February 21.
*
As soon as these conversations are concluded, the movement strategy
core team will create a report on these conversations, that you can
review between March 2 and 6.
*
This report will serve as the main input for the integration meeting
of the recommendations which will take place from March 10 to 12 in
New York. At this meeting, former working group members, the core
team, Katherine Maher and Ryan Merkley will meet to incorporate all
the feedback collected over the last few weeks, and create the final
set of recommendations. These will be published between March 23 and
27, and will be the working document at the Wikimedia Summit.
*
We expect the WMF Board of Trustees to approve these final
recommendations in the week before the Wikimedia Summit, March 27 to
April 3.
You can find a handy timeline here:
https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/155rHcDNAcI3D7iOynX0xtb86LDTE0FoMXVg…
Preparation for the Wikimedia Summit
*
To make it clear: We will not edit, change, or modify the
recommendations at the Wikimedia Summit.By then, they will be set.
On the first day of the Wikimedia Summit, we aim to get all
participants on the same page and to create a shared understanding
of the recommendations.
*
The recommendations consist of so-called “Expected Outcomes” (like:
“Establish a Movement Charter”, “Create a Code of Conduct”, etc.).
On the second and third day, we will discuss which of these outcomes
the organizations and groups should work on first (Prioritization).
Also, we will discuss which outcomes depend on each other and need
to be done prior to others, or can run in parallel (Sequencing).
Ideally, you discuss these two actions – prioritization and
sequencing – inside your affiliate before you come to the Wikimedia
Summit.
*
Finally, we will explore which organizations and groups could take
over which responsibilities during implementation and what kind of
support is needed to initiate a successful implementation process.
We are still working on a method to actually have these difficult
conversations. We would appreciate it if you start discussing what
role you can see for your organization taking in implementing these
“expected outcomes”.
Starting from March 4, we will offer onboarding calls for all
participants, at least 2 to 3 per week, with different timings for
different time zones. If you have a question, if you need more clarity
on the things mentioned above, I would urge you to attend one of these
calls. Members of the Strategy Core Team will attend as well to answer
any process-related questions.
Best regards,
Cornelius

Greetings!
I am working with Kat Thornton to create a Wikibase instance for
compiling global nutrition datasets. We're hoping that some of the data
in this system are useful to other Wikimedia projects, especially Wikidata.
We are applying for WMF Project Grants to cover the costs of engineering
and Edit-a-thon events:
https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Grants:Project/Hackfish/Global_food_and_nut…
If you have any feedback, please let us know! Also, if you support this
idea, please consider adding an endorsement on that proposal page.
I realize I just missed the meetup yesterday but I'd love to come by
next time to talk about the project.
Warm regards,
Mika
Mako,
I, too, will be able to make this evening's panel. I will need to skedaddle
afterwards, so I cannot take you up on your offer for coffee or a drink
post-class.
See you by 5:25pm this evening.
Yours,
Peaceray

Greetings!
I sent this email a week ago but it appears to have not gone through?
I think I may have emailed from the wrong address.
In any case, I know the notice is very short but I wonder if anybody
be able to make it to my class on Wednesday?
Details are below.

Mako

If anyone is available and interested, the long-awaited reopening of the
Seattle Asian Art Museum is next week. The tickets for the opening weekend
have sold out, but we could tour around sometime (perhaps a Free First
Thursday/Saturday).

Greetings Wiki(m|p)edia people!
User:Jtmorgan and I are organizing another set of data science
workshops. As in previous years, we'll be using the Wikipedia API as
one of our main examples. If you've been interested in learning
programming and the Wikipedia API, this might be a great opportunity!
If you register, mention that you're a Wikipedian and on the list and
we'll try to make space for you.
Details are below.

Greetings!
[ Please feel free to forward this on to any other people or lists who
you think might be interested!]
By popular demand, we are organizing another round of the Community
Data Science Workshops. The workshop series consists of one Friday
evening and three Saturday sessions in January and February. These
workshops are for anyone interested in learning how to use programming
and data science tools to ask and answer questions about online
communities like Wikipedia, Twitter, Yelp, Twitter, civic media, free
and open source software, and so on. The Winter 2020 series will be an
updated version of the workshops we ran five times since 2014.
The workshops are for people with no previous programming experience
and are free of charge and open to anyone.
Our goal is that, after this workshop series, participants will be
able to use data to produce numbers, hypothesis tests, tables, and
graphical visualizations to answer questions like:
- Are new contributors to an article in Wikipedia sticking around
longer or contributing more than people who joined last year?
- Who are the most active or influential users of a particular Twitter
hashtag?
- Are people who participated in an outreach event staying involved?
How do they compare to people who joined an online community outside
of the event?
Details and dates are online here:
https://wiki.communitydata.science/CDSW_Winter_2020
If you are interested in participating, please fill out our
registration at the link above before noon Sunday January 13. Register
soon because we tend to be oversubscribed!
If you already know how to program in Python, it would be really
awesome if you would volunteer as a mentor! Being a mentor involves
working with participants and talking them through the challenges they
encounter in programming. No special preparation is required. If
you’re interested, there’s a link on the page above, or you can send
me an email. If you mentored before, it’s still easier if you fill our
form again. Thanks!
Regards,
Mako
(On behalf of Dharma, Mika, Jonathan, Tommy, Ben, Emilia, and all the
CDSW mentors.)
