Hi Cascadians,
At the meetup this past Wednesday, there was interest in pursuing three
activities for the remainder of this year:
1. A WikiExpedition, similar to our expedition to Evans Creek Preserve
<https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Evans_Creek_Preserve>. The destination may
be rural or urban, and is yet to be determined.
2. GLAM+STEM outreach, including to outreach to historical societies.
Personally I am especially interested in the Tulalip Tribes' Hibulb
Cultural Center and Natural History Preserve. This fits with our
longstanding interest in Native American languages and cultures. Today I
left a voicemail for the Center.
3. Cameras for Commons Photographers
<https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Grants:IdeaLab/Cameras_for_Commons_photogra…>.
We are receiving a donation of a Canon wide-angle camera lens from Frank
Schulenburg. If we can arrange for funding of this project by
re-appropriating some funds from other budgets or by requesting a "project
grant" from WMF, then we would purchase a camera body and/or camera kit
with a standard lens that would accompany this wide-angle lens. The kit
would then be given or loaned to a member of the Commons community whose
photography would greatly improve with this equipment (in other words, the
person currently using a lower-quality camera and/or phone camera), whose
photographs are valuable and distinctive for Commons (in other words, not
photos of subjects that are already well-photographed, but instead photos
of subjects for which Commons has little coverage or only low-quality
coverage), and whose record of contributions suggests that the person is
likely to use the equipment for its intended purpose.
I hope to hear back from the Hibulb Cultural Center in the next week or two.
After our 501(c)(3) is finalized, we might re-appropriate any savings from
the budgets related to the 501(c)(3) toward the Cameras for Commons
Photographers project. This will require approval from our Board and from
WMF. Depending on the amount of money available, we may request
supplemental funding from a WMF project grant.
The WikiExpedition will be organized at a date to be determined.
Please respond with any questions or comments.
Have a nice weekend,
Pine
