Hello,
Please do let us know the developments in your chapter preparations. Your brother and sister Asian chapters are willing to help!
I hear that the Thai Chapter will be setting up soon, I like to personally visit Thailand and meet the community there. To our Thai Wikimedians, do let us know about your chapter development.
Greetings to Asian Wikimedians,
I have to admit that we haven't gone that far. Thai Wikimedians generally agree that a chapter is a way to go forward. However, given limited manpower/funding and possible legal implication, we may stay as a loose online movement for a period of time.
The most important issue for us at the moment is to put ideas into pratices. We discussed a number of outreach activities at schools/universities but it hasn't really happened yet. I probably need to push harder and set example for others if I can.
For a possible visit, please leave a message at our embassy page on th.wikipedia. We don't have a capacity to host a visitor yet but you may find a voluteer that want to have a chat with you.
Cheers, Taweetham

We do.
Wikimedia Indonesia could handle visitor and lodging in Jakarta. Let us know on a timely date (two weeks in advance) if you (board members or volunteers) happened to be in Jakarta, we might can clear up a room for you. But it need to be on a possible project basis or wikitraining.
The room is more than decent and free - BUT - do not expect privacy as WMID volunteers, staff, and board members is in and out most of the time. Our busy hours is practically start at 10:00 am to 10:00 pm. No privacy at that time.

Greetings Wikimedia Asia member, I am G(x), the member of the planned Thai Wikimedia. Although I do interest and open for the possibilities of open discussion in Bangkok, I (and only me myself) do not yet to be able to travel freely to other countries, or even in Thailand or Bangkok itself due to parents' control, the education (as I'm a sophomore in the university in Thailand) and sufficient money that may cover the cost of the meeting. In the meantime, I would prefer to use the mailing list and/or private mail to discuss the matter involved the Wikimedia Asia (in particular, Thai Wikimedia)
Regards, G(x)
Perhaps I should be speaking here to share my experiences as a junior in college which had a hand in setting up a Wikimedia chapter: my parents have been particularly supportive of me traveling around and doing Wikipedia-related work (especially if it involves traveling outside the Philippines), and so I don't think parental "control" is a very big issue here if your parents understand that Wikimedia is a very big investment with potentially big returns, especially on your resumé!
I do think though that the time is ripe for other Asian chapters to help out developing communities in their own back yards. This was discussed in Berlin and Gdańsk back in 2010: in the case of Southeast Asia, for example, with Cambodia, Thailand, Malaysia and Singapore expressing interest to organize chapters, Wikimedia Philippines and Wikimedia Indonesia are in the best position to give support for these nascent communities. The same goes with Wikimedia Israel and the greater Middle East, Wikimedia Hong Kong and greater China, etc.
Now I don't think Wikimedia Philippines can facilitate accommodation for Wikipedians just yet, but we will do all that we can to take care of visiting Wikipedians, should any come our way. :)
Regards,
Josh

I think there will be some impetus in the coming weeks to establish a Thailand chapter, or at least a Thai-Khmer-Lao one.

Hi Everybody,
In Nepal we are doing our activities i.e. outreach and some formal programs. We've done as much as three formal programs and in last June 3rd We celebrated our 10th Anniversary of Nepali Wikipedia.
We are regularly meeting and discussing about our programs. Now we're in process of forming a chapter.
We hope the Asian Chapters' community will help us to set up a chapter.
With Best Regards

With all due respect to your parents, my parents does not have any knowledge about the background of Wikipedia. Even though they asked about my involvement, they don't particularly support my activity on Wikipedia/Wikimedia as they found it's a waste of time. I do respect that, therefore I, even though being the active member of Thai Wikipedia, cannot get into works yet as if without their support, I will not be able to travel. However, my position in this one does not mean I do not support, or oppose, or being neutral on the establishment of Thai division, or joint division with Thai. I just say that despite my activity in Wikipedia (which is one of the reason Mr. Taweetham suggested me into this mailing list) I cannot yet go and do the coordination in person, but I still open for the collaboration within the online method (if any)

Several points here:
(1) As our target group is school/university students. It is inevitable that parental support is required but we haven't done much to address this issue. I believe that it boils down into two steps. a.) Parents should recognise the value of volunteer work and allow their children to commit a reasonable time to participate in such activities. b.) Parents should see Wikimedian projects as safe, rewarding and enjoyable venues for their children to volunteer. In Thailand, we need to address both steps. We can't do much about a.), but we can do a lot more on b.).
(2) I agree that the chapters in Philippines and Indonesia will be our mentors/strategic partners for chapters to be established in Thailand (+ other SEA countries). Support from Hong Kong and other Asian chapters (including Israel) are also welcome.
I know that a chapter should stick to its own jurisdiction. However, if the neighbouring haven't got its own chapter yet, we should be able to help each other and engage in activities across the border.
(3) I will be transiting in Taiwan on the 31st of July for eight hours. It would be great if I can have a chat with the chapter over there.
Cheers, Taweetham

I feel sure that if a local Thai chapter can be created, we can address these and other issues. I would like to see us working towards a structured outreach programme for Thailand in which I would be happy to give talks to children, university students, professors, and the press, and encourage others to do the same.

There are cultural issues at play that are very special to Thai education and society. These are often not understood by Thai parents.
The best people to convince Thai parents of the importance of Wikipedia are their children. They should emphasise however, that Wikipedia is not only a place where young, intelligent editors are most welcome, but that it is a place where mostly adults participate, and among them, many teachers and professors.

However, we feel we'd better to start by demonstrating what outreach activities can bring to the online community, which has been already successful to a good extent with a quite modest level of offline activities. For a starter, we are starting preparation for Wiki Loves Monuments 2013 (next year).
Lack of manpower and legal concerns are recognized obstacles for years, too.
Perhaps it could be an inspiring material if we can collect some of the best success stories from neighboring Asian Wikimedia chapters regarding academic outreach, Wiki-training sessions, and the likes. Do we already have one?
