Forwarding this to the wikilovesearth mailing list, as it is just as
relevant here.
Please note this is not limited to Wiki Loves Monuments :) Even though the
commons page may suggest otherwise - but that is mostly for historical and
timeline reasons.

Hi all,
This is a quite early stage idea, so please don't shout me down for not
having specifics yet :)
Looking back at the past few years of Wiki Loves Monuments, Wiki Loves
Earth and now also Wiki Loves Africa (all built upon the same philosophy
<https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:Wiki_Loves_Monuments/Philosophy>),
it stroke me that there is so much being learned in different countries,
but that we are not always effectively sharing that among ourselves. Even
if we share, it doesn't seem that the best practices make it actually to
the implementation - I think there's room for improvement here, and that
this could increase the outcomes (in many different ways) and reduce the
costs (especially in volunteer organizing time).
In the first year that we organized the competition on a global scale, we
had a very effective meeting (May 2011
<https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:Wiki_Loves_Monuments_2011/May_Me…>)
with a bunch of people from countries that indicated they wanted to
organize WLM later that year. Although much was to be improved, it helped
to build an effective network of people helping each other to organize
effective competitions - sharing skills, tools and inspiration. The
discussions there were in my opinion a major component in the success of
the competitions in 2011 and 2012 (in 2012 we also had a shorter meeting in
Amsterdam).
At the same time we have seen the many challenges to get together an
effective international team. While I want to applaud the wonderful work
done by volunteers nationally and internationally, I had the impression
that both at Wiki Loves Earth and later at Wiki Loves Monuments, a better
international coordination could have helped the competition.
I would like you to ponder a bit with me, and think whether it would be
useful to organize again a training meeting for a variety of organizers
around the world, where skills and experiences can be transferred, best
practices can be shared, the network of organizers internationally can be
strengthened and the international coordination can be given a push in the
beginning.
First of all, please think whether this would be a good idea, and if so
what should be the goals, realistic outcomes and what kind of organizers
should be joining definitely. After that, we can draft up the budget, the
pro's and con's and consider whether this would be a wise investment of our
time and money. Don't worry just yet if it is realistic to request the
money etc - that is a separate discussion.
My initial attitude is positive yet somewhat critical (I know it's going to
be expensive, but I think if there is enough support, it could be worth it)
and I very much look forward to your thoughts. Your input would be highly
valued on this page
<https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:Wiki_Loves_Monuments_2015/Traini…>
on
Wikimedia Commons.
Looking forward to your very valuable thoughts,
Lodewijk
PS: I am very happy to help organize such a training to help future
competitions, but please don't think I will join the international team
again :) Just want to be realistic.
Hi All,
It's nice to meet you guys yesterday at Wikimania. I have looked for
more information and found an appropriate list for the competition.
We have ~100 national parks which enjoy millions of visits each year.
However, the photos on commons are still limited. This is a good
ground for participation in WLE. The number of items in the list is
fairly small (~100) for a country of this size but the area for each
national park is quite huge.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_national_parks_of_Thailandhttps://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Category:National_parks_of_Thailand
We look forward to organize the WLE competition in Thailand in the
coming year. Please keep us in touch.
Many thanks
Taweethaも
Hi all,
Just to remind that the Wiki Loves meetup (Wiki Loves Earth, Wiki Loves Monuments and probably other ideas) is today starting 7pm.
Place: Barbican, Lakeside Terrace (terrace with fountains at the ground floor, this one https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Fountain_at_the_Barbican_Centre_1.j… ). Then we'll see if we will want to stay there, find a room or find a pub.
See you there! Mykola (NickK)
Hi all,
I have found out that this year there will be no sessions dedicated to Wiki Loves Monuments or Wiki Loves Earth photo contests in the Wikimania conference programme. Ed Saperia (the conference director) suggested organising a meetup rather then a conference session, so I created https://wikimania2014.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wiki_Loves_meetup
So far I think it would be interesting to discuss the following: * Wiki Loves Earth 2014: the first international edition - thoughts, impressions, ideas, lessons for future.... * Future of Wiki Loves contests - do we want to have both WLE and WLM every year, alternate WLM and WLE, organise some new contest, stop international competitions or do something else? * probably Wiki Loves Monuments 2014, the first edition without dedicated international team (provided there will be enough people interested in it).
If you have other topics to discuss, please add your suggestions!
Please add your name here if you are interested in attending. The more we are, the more interesting discussion we will have and the better spot in the programme we will get :)
P.S. Sorry for those who won't be at Wikimania, but I can't really find this out...
Best regards and see you in London!
Mykola aka NickK, from Ukraine
Hi everyone, and sorry for being late at delivering jury tool :(
I hope its not too late
You can test the jury tool at http://jury.wikilovesearth.org.ua
Logins are
andorracatalanareas1@test
armenianagornokarabakh1@test
austria1@test
azerbaijan1@test
brazil1@test
estonia1@test
germany1@test
ghana1@test
india1@test
macedonia1@test
nepal1@test
thenetherlands1@test
Numbers from 1 to 10 are valid after country.
So there are 10 test accounts for each country.
Password for all of them is the same: 123
Each test account has 1/5th of the contest images to review. The selection
round is a select/reject one.
I will setup real jury accounts for you when you ask.
Soon I will update to add regions and monument descriptions from your lists
(already done for Ukraine, but I' have to parse your countries lists to
add) and give message files to translate jury tool in your languages.
Ilya
Will you be able to do the same for WLE monuments as well? Perfectly
they are bigger than a dot in map and must thus be marked with a polygon
but actual lists contain only point-coordinates so it must be quite the
same. --Base

Hello!
Can someone fix the bug in this tool:
http://tools.wmflabs.org/ptwikis/WLE
When I click on the Dutch number of uploads, I get an error.
For the Dutch organisation we use this user list.
Please let me know when it is fixed!
Greetings & thanks!
Romaine
