Hi
We currently spread our offline content mostly online. In the case of ZIM files, many of them are really huge.
I received today a feedback from Kiwix user in Spain who has downloaded the full WPES ZIM file (~10GB) over many weeks... at the end he has discovered that in the meantime we had released a new version of this file. He was obviously a little bit frustrated.
What do you think about the idea of providing an online share-platform for ZIM files. A small Web site allowing people to: * announce that they have a file and are ready to give/copy it for someone * provide a solution to find thus people with a map * provide a solution to bring provider and searcher in touch
Remarks? Does someone knows a software which maybe already does that?

Yeah, that's called bittorrent...
Emmanuel is looking for a offline, real life solution.
I like the idea. Makes sense to me.

From the Kiwix page it looks like these files are of the order of 5-15 GB. Would it be possible to have it available in certain locations on USB flash drives for mailing to people? I would be willing to mail one to people in North America, for example, and maybe Wizzy could have copies available in South Africa. The only issue I foresee would be paying for the flash drives - we wouldn't want to be subsidising people's tech supplies, but it would be nice to make them free for worthy causes. Alternatively, could it be burnt onto a set of DVDs?

Something like http://www.wikiusb.com ? In the system I propose, maybe we should also be able to find such businesses?

We, at Kiwix, we have done such things (spreading physically our content/solution) many times in the past and we have at least 3 projects of that type running for 2012.
But, thus things seem to me to be far from my original idea which is "just" a free solution (it does not involve money - except maybe to develop the software) to promote people/businesses able to provide without downloading them our offline content/solution.

I partly reply to myself and so one maybe get more feedbacks. I have discovered http://www.ushahidi.com/ which IMO could be able to motorize such a solution. The primary purpose of such a tool is not mine, but this could maybe fit.

Emmanuel, If you need contacts at Ushahidi, we have someone at Wikimedia Kenya who works for Ushahidi, and I could connect you. --Abbas.

YES, it's not the first time someone propose me to do something like deaddrops. Let us try to make something together now: http://www.kiwix.org/index.php/Deaddrops_%26_Geocaching
