Sincerely,
Has decided to write this email to keep you informed. For the past two
months has begun a process of selection of articles. The selection uses the
same criteria used in WP 1.0. in English. The number of articles is about
30,000. The selection process will use the following formula sets:
Spanish WP beta = (A U B U C) - D
A = Selection of the first 30 thousand articles in order of internal
and external (<LANGLINKS>, <PAGELINKS> and <HITCOUNT>).
Select name, id_article from articles order by <LANGLINKS>,
<PAGELINKS>, <HITCOUNT> LIMIT 30,000
B = Spanish version of the list of articles included in WP 1.0 in
English. If there is a corresponding article in Spanish.
C = articles to be added manually.
For its encyclopedic value => good, quality articles.
D = list of articles to be removed. By different factors: sexually
explicit, controversial or controversial, violence and general audience
sensitive content
Additionally, WikiTrust extract the best version ID, ie the best version in
the history ID for each article.
Everyone is invited to contribute.
I am at your service.
The project contact is:
http://es.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Wikipedia_en_CDhttp://es.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Wikipedia_en_CD/Taller
P.D. I have spoken to Martin A. Walker and Jessie Wild to help me through
the process of automatic selection of the first joint.

Hi folks in the education & offline content communities,
as you probably know, Kiwix is an offline reader application for ZIM
files, which are compressed content packages of Wikipedia content for
offline use. ZIM content packages include the "Wikipedia for Schools"
selection, the "Wikipedia 0.8" edition, as well as any arbitrary
collection of Wikipedia articles through the "Create a book" feature
on Wikipedia. As such, they have relevance both for use of our content
without Internet connectivity, and use within an educational setting
where there may be a desire to use specific selections of content.
An important conversation happening on the Kiwix development list (see
email form Tomasz below): How should repositories/feeds of content
packages be advertised? This connects to larger/deeper questions about
the future direction of our offline efforts, possible inclusion of
other educational resources beyond Wikimedia content, feedback
channels, etc. (I'll share some more detailed thoughts about those
issues soon.)
If you have thoughts re: this first spec (e.g. existing metadata
standards that would be useful here -- keep in mind this is highly
iterative development), feel free to comment here and we'll pass
through important conversations, or participate directly on the Kiwix
dev list.
All best,
Erik

Greetings All,
Today Emmanuel posted the first version of the content manager feed
format at http://kiwix.org/index.php/FeedFormat. This is the first
draft of the XML (like) spec for anyone wanting to publish a feed that
Kiwix can understand. For those unfamiliar with the project its part
of our current efforts to build out a content manager as documented in
http://kiwix.org/index.php/WMF_UX_Improvement_Effort
Were looking to write and implement a spec within our current efforts
so that we can eventually have numerous content providers publish
content available to Kiwix and any OER tools.
Were especially curious to find anyone who's worked with atom and rss
feeds since this will share some similar attributes.
Please help us refine it by commenting and helping us get to our first version.

Ok, is there a difference?
I wonder what the mobile sites do, I regularly hear complaints ans developers stating that a rewrite was needed while mobile site works fine for me.

why not to use http://en.m.wikipedia.org/ instead of mobile.wikipedia.org . isn't that a batter version?

Hi all,
in a few minutes I will leave for LinuxTag, our yearly open source convention in Berlin where openZIM will be present again.
If you like to come please drop me a note, we have free tickets for you!
Another, really awesome news:
We have a new regular visitor in our IRC channel (#openzim on Freenode) who lives in India and is currently implementing the ZIM file format on Java. He was able to get a (official!) Java library for LZMA2: http://tukaani.org/xz/java.html
gremmachook (so is the nickname) is looking forward to make a dump of mobile.wikipedia.org (there are some issues here) and make it available on phones supporting J2ME (more or less all phones). The next step could be an Android application...
That's it for today,
regards,
Manuel

Regards,
Great!, and the extension has been approved yesterday by Mozilla.
I have many questions about this process. I'm a little confused. I do
not understand the selection process for quality and forgive me if you
are not the best position to know.
Steps to a WP version 1.0 in Spanish.
1) WP 1.0 bot makes a list of articles that should be with the ID
article. (Articles are selected by various criteria, in this case, a
general-purpose encyclopedia with the greatest number of articles)
2) WikiTrust select the best version for each item. (id version) (What
is needed Firefox plugin if it is done automatically)
3) Now we have a long list of items with your id better version.
4) The list is sent to create a file OpenZIM ZIM. (This happened and
what will henceforth I understand)

*Update on Offline Wikipedia Projects *
The last week was a big week for expanding offline Wikipedia
<http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Offline_Projects> work.
Right now, /offline/ refers to supporting read access to Wikimedia
content without an Internet connection. This increases the reach of the
Wikipedia movement by providing more opportunities for people all over
the world to access the materials. Some of the recent initiatives
surrounding this project were documented in Wikimedia's tech blog
<http://techblog.wikimedia.org/2011/01/update-on-offline-wikimedia-projects/>
about a month ago (for more detail regarding the purpose for offline
work, see the offline strategy
<http://strategy.wikimedia.org/wiki/Offline> page).
In support of our offline readership work, we're thrilled to announce
the launch of a new feature on Wikipedia developed with our partners
from PediaPress <http://pediapress.com/>. Last week we enabled openZim
<http://openzim.org/Main_Page> (the main file format in which offline
materials are stored) export for the existing PediaPress collections
extension on English Wikipedia and numerous other wikis. This means
that individuals can now use the existing PediaPress Create a book
<http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Help:Books> tool and download it in a
format which can be read offline (via an offline reader, such as Kiwix
<http://kiwix.org/index.php/Main_Page>). This is important because it
opens new avenues for the creation of offline materials, for example, an
openZim library hosting different offline "book" options.
Also, the English offline collection Wikipedia 0.8
<http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Version_0.8>was made officially
available
<http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Version_0.8/downloads>, after
much hard work by the Wikipedia 1.0 Editorial Team
<http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Version_1.0_Editorial_Team>.
This collection is an iteration in the process of developing a vetted
collection of offline articles selected based on their quality and
topical importance. The main constraint with an offline product is the
data size restrictions: the entirety of Wikipedia must somehow be
condensed so that it fits on a CD, DVD, or USB stick. Wikipedia 1.0
aims at creating the highest quality and most valuable subset of
Wikipedia to meet those size requirements, and v0.8 is a precursor.
Wikipedia 0.8 is a general collection of just under 50K articles, It
is available for Mac, PC, or Linux with a Linux or Okawix reader; some
mobile phone versions will be available later this month as well.
More updates are sure to come on this offline front: Wikimedians around
the world are actively assisting in the development of offline
collections as well as distribution. We are excited to support and
document the momentum going forward.
Jessie Wild, Global Development
Hi Jessie,
your mail today reminds me that I still owe you an answer to another
mail you sent me days ago. My apologies, I am rebuilding / moving
currently and don't have internet at our new home, so my volunteer
activities are currently limited to a few minutes I can spare during my
office work.
Concerning the Offline Workshop:
It was my intention to include all those interested in the topic. I call
it a workshop because I'd like everyone who can contribute (eg. the
parties you have listed) to be active and not only part of the audience.
We have done a workshop like this last year in Gdansk where three
different sessions have been submitted and we (the submitters) stuck our
heads together and made it one bigger session. This has been openZIM,
Kiwix, WP1.0 and the team of the Malayalam Wikipedia-CD.
This year we have several plans for Wikimania which haven't all been
planned completely yet due to lack of time but I like to lay them out to
you, so you can see where the Foundation can kick in:
* openZIM Developers Meeting on August 2nd / 3rd (part of / in parallel
to the Wikimedia Hacking Days)
* Developing Nations workgroup meeting on August 2nd
Emmanuel / Kelson who is part of the openZIM team is also the developer
of Kiwix and part of WP1.0 and he will be at Wikimania 2011. openZIM is
sponsoring the travel to Wikimania for our developers and the
participants for the Developing Nations workgroup meeting.
I am pretty sure that Martin A. Walker will (as he did last year)
participate in our workshop. He is the head behind the WP1.0 rating tools.
So far from my side.
I could need support in announcing the openZIM Developers Meeting and
the Developing Nations workgroup meeting. Contact person for the latter
is Rupert Thurner (Wikimedia CH).

Manuel

Hello Offline Community -
I just wanted to direct your attention to the offline portal on the
meta-wiki that is to be used to track all offline projects! It can be
found here: http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Offline_Projects. The goal
is that this becomes the central place where all the offline materials
and lessons learned will be codified and available for access.
There are a variety of ways to contribute to the site (which is
certainly still WIP) - whether uploading guides, content, processes,
contacts. In particular, I wanted to solicit help in populating a map
designed to capture where all the offline distributions have taken
place. Right now we have little idea the full landscape of offline
deployments, and it would be great to see this!
A Google Map
<http://maps.google.com/maps/ms?ie=UTF8&hl=en&msa=0&msid=2004448215665451857…>
was set up to track these deployments [1]. There are a few examples
already on it, but for each location we would basically want to include:
* Number of offline distributions: (i.e., #computers)
* Number impacted: (e.g., # of students + teachers)
* Content: (e.g., "Wikipedia for Schools")
* Language: (e.g., "English")
* Contact: (e.g., "Jessie Wild" (or usernames))
* Other/Notes: (if applicable)
If you need help populating the map, please let me know, and I am happy
to send instructions on how to do so.
Let me know what questions you have! And please do contribute to the
wiki in whatever way you think is most valuable: reorganizing, uploading
content, data, etc.
Jessie

Hi,
we have always more different ZIM file available and need ways to
identify/differentiate them quickly.
For this reason I think this is important to use if possible something
like a Web favicon in ZIM file.
The modifications I propose are:
* URL should be /I/favicon.png
* increase the minimum size to 48x48 to be able also to display
correctly in list of content.
The topic was triggered by the implementation of the new Kiwix content
manager, have look to the mockup here:

Remarks?
