It returns currently the binary value which is not so easy to handle with (can
not use standard string manipulation functions and can not easily save it in a
file).
It would be better to return the same value but in HEX format as a NULL
terminated string. This would avoid (I'm sure) each client using the zimlib to
recode this conversion.

Currently, the ZIM format can only support a limited and predefined set of
document mime-types.
You can get the list of supported mime-types here:
http://www.openzim.org/ZIM_File_Format#Mime_types
Mime-types are represented by a number in a ZIM file, and the mapping is done
statically by the zimlib.
This means than you can not store document with custom mime-type.
This is a problem for me because I have people who use Kiwix and deal with
other mime-types, for example: archives or binaries.
I think, this is a necessary improvement to make this mime-type table dynamic.
I see two solutions :
* The ZIM file creator specify it manually during the creation process.
* It goes automatically (also during the creation process).

Currently, I do not have released a version of 0.9.
So, it's trunk

But, if you are only interested in the client code (also kiwix-serve).
You may work with the tgz available here:

Hi everybody,
I want to announce here I have finished a first version of kiwix-serve.
kiwix-serve is an HTTP server able to serve any ZIM file an providing the
same search engine as Kiwix (like most of you knows based on Xapian).
It's base on libmicrohttpd library.
This is not as sophisticated and efficient as our zimreader but It works well and
I hope it is at least as easy to deploy. Hope also with it to be able to provide easily many
of the Kiwix features.
You may have a look on two instances of it:
* WP0.7 : http://library.kiwix.org:4201/
* 2008/9 Wikipedia Selection for schools : http://library.kiwix.org:4202/
If you want to try it, please follow the next instructions... each feedback is welcome:
* download&compile&install Kiwix: http://www.kiwix.org/index.php/Compilation
* download a ZIM file (new format)... you know where ;)
* index your file: kiwix-index [ZIM_PATH] [INDEX_PATH]
* start kiwix-serve: kiwix-serve [ZIM_PATH] [PORT] [INDEX_PATH]
You may also run kiwix-serve without index, but in this case you won't have access to the search engine.

Emmanuel
Hey there,
I've got quite a long list of things to discuss with you:
== Developers Meeting 2009-2 ==
* http://openzim.org/2009-11-23_Report_Developers_Meeting_2009-2
The report for the our 2nd Developers Meeting that took place in the end
of November 2009 is finally ready, at least I regard it as being ready.
Please revise it and make changes where needed.
== Yearly Report 2009 ==
* http://openzim.org/Yearly_Report_2009
At the Developers Meeting in November we agreed to write a report on
what we did in 2009 and send it to our sponsors and supporters which are
Wikimedia CH and the Wikimedia Foundation.
If the report above is good I will start compiling a report from the
press releases and individual reports we have published for 2009.
As you see I have already created a structure for the report, so feel
free to fill in any information you have to help completing it.
== Budget 2010 ==
* http://openzim.org/Budget_2010
I have started to plan for a budget in 2010, based on our requirements.
Last year we applied for sponsorship at Wikimedia CH and made up a
roughly estimated budget as we didn't had any experience and figures we
could rely on.
This year is different, we have gained experience on the growth and
requirements of our meetings we already had. So my approach is to
calculate the requirements to host two Developer Meetings in a
professional venue for ten attendees. I have sent inquiries for quotes,
so we will have professional meetings and some room in the budget to be
able to fully concentrate on our work.
Once the budget is ready I will ask several organisations for
sponsorship, as Wikimedia CH and the Wikimedia Foundation. My hope is
that Wikimedia CH will cover the most part while the Wikimedia
Foundation supports us with one of their community grants.
Please feel free to discuss the budget here or on the wiki and bring up
your thoughts and ideas.
== LinuxTag 2010 ==
* http://openzim.org/LinuxTag_2010
LinuxTag 2010 will take place on June 9th - 12th again in Berlin.
Tommi and I have applied for a booth and we are looking forward in
getting a shared booth as last year for both openZIM and tntnet.
This year we also handed in a paper for a talk we want to give on
openZIM together. If you have any ideas or opinion, just let us know or
add them to the wiki page.
And of course we like to invite all of you to visit our booth or even
help at the booth for a day or as long as you can. This is also a good
opportunity to have something like a small Developers Meeting during the
exhibition.
LinuxTag is also a valuable opportunity to meet with other activists in
the FOSS movement and start new cooperations and partnerships, such as
Linux4Africa or SkoleLinux which will have their booth there as well. We
try to get a booth near those interesting projects.
Please participate. Just add your name on the list in the wiki, I will
book accommodation for all us in the same hotel and take care of a good
rate.
== MediaWiki Developer Meet-Up 2010 ==
* http://openzim.org/MediaWiki_Developer_Meet-Up_2010
Just new is the call for the MediaWiki Developer Meet-Up which took
place last year for the first time. I have been at the Wikimedia
Conference (aka. "Wikimedia Chapters Meeting") which was taking place in
parallel, but I still meet the participants of the Developer Meet-Up at
dinner and at the party after the conference.
Our contacts to the Wikimedia Foundation, Wikimedia Israel and Wikimedia
Italia have been made there.
I don't know yet if I have time to be there, but I recommend everyone
who is interested to come there. Just sign up at the wiki page. I am
pretty sure that Tomasz Finc will be there as well as part of the
Wikimedia Developers team.
Last year the meeting took place in the famous c-base in Berlin, a very
special place perfect for such events. Wikimedia Deutschland took care
of accommodation in a nearby hostel, breakfast, lunch and even day
passes for the local transport for all participants, all for a decent
fee (100 EUR). I hope and guess it will be handled the same this year.
--
This was a lot of information and I am happy to finally managed to share
it with you. Thanks for reading through all of it.
Until the end of February I will be traveling all over Europe and hardly
have time to take care about everything.
So please go ahead and alway remember: It's a wiki!
Have a great weekend!
/Manuel

This would be really great if you or Tommy may attend to this meeting.
My issue concerning Mediawiki is really simple: I do not get support from the WMF concerning the DumpHTML extension.
https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/buglist.cgi?query_format=advanced&order=Impo…
We can make an extension to build directly a ZIM against a Mediawiki but this extension will stay mandatory to make specific things.... so this is essential to have support there.
I have also discovered 2 weeks ago that the problem seems to be exactly the same with mwDumper... mandatory to work with WMF XML dumps:
https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=22137

Emmanuel
This might be interesting in the perspective of implementing the ZIM
export in MW and of course for marketing openzim.
I can't yet promise that I will attend, but I will try to. And don't
forget that whe have planned to have our next dev meeting in April as
well, but maybe we can
* combine those two meetings
* shift it a bit
Please state your opinions.

Betreff: [Wikitech-l] Developer Meet-Up in Berlin, April 14-16
Datum: Fri, 05 Feb 2010 22:12:21 +0100
Von: Daniel Kinzler <daniel(a)brightbyte.de>
Hi all
Wikimedia Germany invites all MediaWiki developers, Toolserver users, Gadget
hackers, and other people interested in the technical side of Wikimedia
projects
to come to Berlin for a Developer Meet-Up on April 14.-16. Last year's
meet-up
in Berlin was a great success, and we hope to make it even better this time!
This year we want to focus on structured (meta) data, search, and community
building. The future of the Toolserver will also be a subject.
The dates are set, but it's not clear yet if we start full throttle on
Wednesday
the 14th or if we have just an arrival event on that date and a full day on
Friday the 16th instead - this depends on venue arrangements that are
not sorted
out yet. Note that registration in advance will be required - a website
will be
set up for this soon, we will announce it on blogs and mailing lists.
On that Friday, April 16., the Wikimedia Chapters and Board start their
convention in Berlin. This will be a great opportunity to meet, to discuss
interesting topics, to network and to exchange ideas and thoughts! Wikimedia
Germany will host the event, so we will organize the venue, the
hotel(s), some
fun things to do in Berlin, food & drinks and lots of other things - and
there
might even be a party at the c-base again...
See you in Berlin!

Hey there,
I just wanted to give you a little progress report on vido [1].
After the openzim developer-meeting [2] quite a few changes were made to the
format to allow the usage of zim files even on limited devices such as the
Ben NanoNote.
Last night, after finally finding the right file, I managed to get the full
german wikipedia (without images) to run nicely. The file is on the openzim
server in their download section[3].
There are quite a few neat functions in vido. Please be patient with it,
responses are not instant, but it does what you ask it after 1-2s at the
most. There are still a few quirks here and there. Scrolling is not optimal,
the way links can be selected deserves another look etc etc. But the
foundation works.
One word abotu the zim files. Currently there are only german wiki files
that have been tested. I will dive into the mechanism of creating other zim
files as soon as I get back from FOSDEM. I have been told there is a process
for that already, but it is not well documented. We are also in talks with
the Wikimedia Foundation and other wikis to get them to publish wiki files
themselves.
If anyones feels like diving into the code to make it better, faster, nicer
please go ahead. Just contact me for git access and such.
Once again a big yay for the openzim project!
Ok, here a small list of what vido can do:
- open and display contents of a zim file (on the console):
vido [PATH TO FILE]
- get a random article (in vido):
ctrl + r
- search for an article (in vido):
ctrl + s
- go back to last article (in vido):
ctrl + b
- go to next article (if you went back before) (in vido):
ctrl + f
- display your history (in vido):
ctrl + h
- go to top (in vido):
ctrl + t
To move through links in an article use TAB. If you only want to scroll use
the arrow keys.
Note: If you scroll the cursor doesn't move, which means that if you tab
after you scrolled for a while the display will go back to the last link you
selected.

Hi Mirko,
this is really a good news.
Hope to see a tar.gz soon to test on my computer.
