Hello, you may remember the WMIT WIR at BEIC; if not, see links in
English. :) https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:GLAM/BEIC
Last week, the 10 months collaboration came to an end; I published a
lenghty report/case study in Italian. TL;DR: free software developed, 10
BEIC staff contributing, a thousand images uploaded, 6500 usages, 400
articles created, 4 millions accesses/month.
https://it.wikipedia.org/wiki/Progetto:GLAM/BEIC/2015-07
The partnership between WMIT and BEIC will actually continue, but I'll
have a non-BEIC job at WMIT and a non-wiki job at BEIC. So I'll do
little/no editing for BEIC; probably some planning, training, uploading
and maybe coding. Maybe WMIT will keep providing BEIC a wiki editor and
invoice for it, maybe not.
I have some requests from you! I hope you can help.
1) Comments on the past months, e.g. based on the monthly updates or
brutal numbers.
2) Suggestions on what is worth translating of the report. There are
passages trying to push institutions to free software, open data, public
domain, community consultation, involvement of staff. Someone liked my
metaphor "be like mushroom, not sequoias". But maybe this is all covered
better elsewhere already?
3) Recommendations on how to update
https://outreach.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wikipedian_in_Residence . Should I
still be listed there, or call the WIR done? Where to record the
WMIT-BEIC partnership?
4) Lessons from other partnerships with institutions having an in-house
wikimedian not doing wiki work. (Other than Sannita/Luca at ICCU...)
Perhaps Scotland, Netherlands and Switzerland have more to say as AFAICT
they are all moving towards a permanent team serving multiple
institutions à la traveling WIR, like WMIT.
Nemo
P.s.: Sorry for cross-posting but I think it's better than many
overlapping messages; if possible reply on each list to the parts
relevant for that list and cc only me, not all the other lists.
Dear all,
Since Tuesday I’ve started the upload of around 8000 pictures of amoeba, everything was going smoothly until yesterday afternoon.
It seems that at a moment we have saturated our own server with too many parallel request and the GWToolset start facing "HTTP request timed out » , as you can see in the GWToolset log https://commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?title=Special:Log&type=gwtoolset <https://commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?title=Special:Log&type=gwtoolset> it the same story since yesterday around 5PM.
I’ve asked our CIO, and he told me that indeed GWToolset is using the whole bandwidth of our server :-(
Now I don’t know what to do? is there a moment GWToolset will stop doing request to the WMCH server? should we restart our server?
incidentally , the account used for setting the batch upload receive now several « Error: 1205 Lock wait timeout exceeded; try restarting transaction (10.0.6.41) «
Do you think it’s related, I saw that someone already mentionned this error while using GWToolset.
Thanks to all for your help.
Cheers
Charles

Hi all, I could use some advice on a problem I'm having with prepping an
upload...
My batch of images contain descriptions written in a half-dozen languages,
so I need to have different language tags for them. However, only SOME of
the files have that metadata included (other times it's just blank so I
can't help that).
My metadata has these two elements, for example:

lorem ipsum

And, if I understand the documentation correctly, I need for it to be
formatted in this way if I want to get the GWT to automatically wrap the
language template:

lorem ipsum

Question 1: Is that correct that I need to merge these two metadata fields
in that way? Or, am I able to leave them as they currently are (that would
be ideal!)
Question 2: If I DO have to merge them, how can I merge these two fields
when only SOME of the records have a
tag at all? (recalling that
I can't add the same tag to all the records because they're in multiple
different languages).
I hope this makes sense...
Sincerely,
-Liam

Peace, love & metadata
Thanks so much! I've just now uploaded two small batches that should be accurate now. If those go as planned I'll then request access to the live batch uploader per the guidance. Cheers!

Files on beta will be deleted from time to time. No worries. All fine :)

There was an error in my xml file (forgot to close a bracket on a wiki template). They are the ones uploaded from username Ndalyrose from between the time of 14:06, 28 May 2015 and 17:44, 28 May 2015. (The previous files are ok). This morning I tried to upload correct ones and they're not showing up so I'm wondering if this is related.

Ugh, my apologies! I mistakenly processed the wrong test file in the batch uploader which loaded quite a few incorrect images into the beta site. Is there a way to delete these? There was an error in my xml file (forgot to close a bracket on a wiki template). Also, you should be advised, there was some sort of bug on commons where some files have their image description page missing, including a bunch of files for when you used gwtoolset and when user:Neuchâtel_Herbarium did. And they're now missing all the copyright data :S

Thanks, we will take care of it as soon as the Neuchatel Herbarium is ready again, it looks like the GWToolset task could also lead to some "

Dear all,
Perhaps there is a temporary log file for each batch? (Possibly this has
been discussed before..) Sometimes some files in a batch are NOT uploaded
and need special care...can be hard to find.
Thanks, kind regards, hans muller
Thanks Fae! So it looks like there's no way of designating the language of say an artwork title as "Romanised Chinese, Pinyin System" and "Romanised Japanese, Modified Hepburn" is that correct? I suppose I could simply state those additional titles as a separate field, maybe called "Romanised Title", or within the notes and not worry about using a template for those.
Best,
Nora

Hi Folks,
James is correct, there are two ways to import existing Ground Control Points. The first is in CSV format for imported maps which has to be run by a server admin - ideally this should be exposed as part of the user interface. This can handle multiple maps and multiple points at once.
The second is doing it by hand via the user interface - a user can paste in coordinates manually, so that would be the easiest and quickest way for individual maps. In the control panel, click "control points" link and then the "add control point manually" button, and paste in the coordinates.
Regarding projections - for many old maps these cannot be used accurately, because paper stretches, the lens on the camera may distort things, the map may have folds or be made of several images, or it may be inaccurately surveyed. In theory it could be possible to reverse engineer the original projection based on the solution of the control points - that could be a fun exercise for someone to do even though it would have no utility for the warper.
Regards,
Tim

Mapwarper could do so without too much trouble (Tim?); it is unlikely that the projection can be estimated since an algorithm could not differentiate between error and projection fit. -rhw

Hi Nora,
The Commons language policy can be found at < http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:Language_policy>. To put any language in an artwork or information template, you just add a template around the text like {{en|1=<your text>}} for english or {{zh|1=<your
text>}} for chinese. The language templates are listed with more
explanation at <http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:Language_templates
>
As an example, here's one in a mass upload of mine from the World Digital Library < http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:A_Comprehensive_Calendar_Arranged_by…
> it displays in 7 languages, you should be able to toggle between them
unless your settings are to display all languages at the same time.

Hiya! Just introducing myself to the list as I suspect I’ll have lots of questions for you over the course of trying to learn the GWToolset! Ally Crockford, James Heald and Jonathan Cardy were very helpful last week in getting us up to speed over at British Library.
I’m currently working on getting this collection up so you may see lots of tests on the Beta Site around that http://www.jacar.go.jp/english/jacarbl-fsjwar-e/gallery/index.html.
I’ve just about got my xml file crafted but want to add in the right language templates and am having a bit of trouble finding the right ones. Please see the metadata attached.

Think before you print
Good afternoon,
Thank you for this feedback about your feelings and the lack of
documentation of the process.
I raised independently with Steinsplitter on the IRC channel
#wikimedia-commons the issue of documentation two days ago and
subscribe to the Fae, Bawollf comments.
https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:GLAMwiki_Toolset#Instructions
now contains the information we need, and when we usually process
these requests.
I can confirm if the request would have immediately stated at creation
time this were intended for a GLAM workshop, I would have processed it
the same evening.
If you wish to know how we handle these (at least how I handle these),
I'm giving some indication about the workflow. As indicated by
Bawollf, our priority is to ensure the request is a legitimate one and
is not controversial.
As far as I'm concerned, the Wikimedia Commons community is the one
qualified for any configuration change related to Commons, and has
made implicitly clear they trust both GLAM institutions and
experienced, trusted users in good standing with the community to
make whitelist requests. This is so a simplified and straightforward
process, any other change requiring a formal consensus on the wiki.
The community has also made more or less clear they only want to
whitelist public domain sources.
So, my first step is to ensure the request is from a GLAM institute or
a trusted Commons user.
When I see a request from a trusted Commons users, I process it
immediately without any further question. So, despite they thought
they couldn't do anything, if they've added a comment in the bug "I'm
... and I endorse this request", it would have been useful as this
endorsement is a green light. As would have been useful any comment it
were from a GLAM institute.
If this information is missing, as it were here the case, I ask on IRC
on both #wikimedia-commons and #wikipedia-fr (this channel has several
very active trusted Commons users, not always reactive on the first)
if someone could endorse the request. IRC is one of our main way to
communicate for development and operations stuff.
If someone endorses the request, I state so and plan it for
deployment. If nobody answers or has reticence, I state so in the
ticket and wait for more feedback (for example, the remark about the
resolution of files came from a trusted Commons user).
Generally, the reply from Commons administrators contains opinion
about their own assertion of the copyright status of the files, in
accordance with community practices. I also state this opinion in the
bug.
To conclude, our main priority is to ensure our config changes reflect
the willingness of the community, which means for whitelist: (i) it
comes from a legit requester (GLAM partner or experienced trusted
Commons user) (ii) metadata contains enough information to assert
copyright status.
Please note this is generalised to any task or bug tracker: the more
context and information you give, the more elements the person reading
your task will have to be able to understand and act upon.
Disclaimer: this reply is made in my quality of Wikimedia volunteer
handling site requests. It occurs I'm also administrator on Wikimedia
Commons, but this is not in this quality I handle such request or give
this opinion. The only advantage I have on this matter as Wikimedia
Commons administrator is to be able to immediately after deployment
test if the upload by URL works.
