Hi all - I know there have been challenges in getting this group going - and I thank Sean and the others for their patience.
Barring an IRC meeting (and I do want to participate there as well) I have a couple of quick questions.
How many do we have on this group list altogether? I should probably be able to find that out on the list page.
Secondly, we've now got the software in place for a wordpress blog at blog.wikimedia.org. It's in the freezer for now (i.e. not operating :) but not for long.
What I'm wondering is if we have any pros on this list, or if we could recruit someone, who could revamp the graphics template slightly to make it look a bit more wikimedia-esque. It will always be on a page all its own, but I'd at least like it to look/feel as much like the WMF wiki as possible.
Eventually we want to unleash some new mediawiki coding/functionality that will allow us to have blogging convention built right into the mediawiki system - so there'd be no transition. I suspect a huge number of media wiki users would treasure this option.
Any thoughts? Let's discuss...

There is a list of members and their areas of interest on http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Communication_Projects_Group/Membership.

I have flashbacks to the Fundraising "Why Give" Blog, perhaps because it's the same config. :-P (It seems you are asking us to update it here.)

Well, the Wikimedia colors are green, red, and blue; however blue seems to be used the most on foundationwiki.

Just as a suggestion, I would replace the WikiMedia Fundraising logo, with perhaps "Wikimedia Blog".

Definitely - all of this is in the cards. I have a lot of ideas about how I'd like it to look.
What I don't have is a lot of experience editing the wordpress template system.

I'll take a look tonight, I have never done WordPress in the past. If after reviewing Wordpress, I have a grasp and some ideas, I'll post tomorrow. :)
Regards,

I dislike the idea of blogging in mediawiki - mediawiki is a collaborative site, not a blog - there is already something (wikinoodle or something if I can remember right) which is wordpress, joomla! and mediawiki combined.

Define "blogging convention on mediawiki". Nothing prevents you to get mediawiki articles and display them in a bloggish style. The easier would probably be just having Wordpress use the mediawiki login (ideally from SUL, for now it'd need to be from meta), that shouldn't be hard to do (its login have been integrated before).

Quick question - who is to post to this blog? Will it be moderated selections from http://planet.wikimedia.org/ ?

It will predominantly be something I, or the staff, use to share information that might not necessarily warrant use of a press release. That's a very vague way to describe it, but it represents one of the key considerations.
With comments it will also be a means for people to ask questions, generate discussion.
My biggest hope is to put good news from signpost etc on there. Signpost is great, but public/media might not be able to get to it quickly. This way they come to the WMF wiki and the blog should be very visible, easy to find.
I also see good reason to share other posts on the planet wikimedia page, or other people we're friendly with.
