New toy! Upon loading an image page, it will scan the categories of that image, and, for each category, show the last and next one in the order of "addition to the category" as a thumbnail. Sounds complicated? Have a screenshot:
http://www.magnusmanske.de/wikipedia/gallerypreview.png
I put it under [[MediaWiki talk:Gallerypreview.js]]. Installation instructions on the page: http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/MediaWiki_talk:Gallerypreview.js
(Now that I read it, "gallerypreview" is not exactly correct; catchy name, anyone?)
Besides the "pretty" factor, it has some practical uses: * Shows number of images in the categories (spot one-image-only categories) * Complains if there's no/only "trivial" (licensing etc) categories
The query.php interface won't give more than 500 results per category, so last/next information on larger categories /will be wrong/. If you find any more "trivial" categories, please let me know (or add them to the script, it's simple, really!).
Have fun, Magnus
Copied to MediaWiki namespace, you really need to apply for adminship Magnus ;)

Sorry once more for the spam, I have now found out you are already running for adminship. I should check before I type in future.

Yep, agreed with others.

Well, 'gallerypreview' is COMPLETELY the wrong name. it should be 'categorypreview'. :)
Secondly can you do the same thing for actual gallery pages? (main namespace) e.g. http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Image:Fort_Siloso%2C_Sentosa%2C_Aug_06.JPG this image is in a gallery, but no categories.
Thirdly.... can you please write it into MW???? :]
Cool stuff, as usual, Magnus. :)

I can find all pages (in the main namespace) that include this image, but neither query.php nor api.php let me find the other images used on these pages. So, can't be done with JavaScript ATM.

Of course I can, and it would be faster and would take care of the gallery issue. Alas, experience tells me that it will never get turned on, and an extension would never be installed on the live sites.
Cool stuff, as usual, Magnus. :)
Thanks :-)

Very nice, I like it :) However, I've found that with large landscape previews and both the category preview and js checkusage installed, the image preview tends to be pushed down below the catpreview. I have a wide monitor and this still happens. You can see herehttp://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Image:Editor_at_Large%2527s_test_image.png. Is that due to how I have the two installed in my javascript subpage or is it something else?

Whoops, something messed up with the link. Try this instead: http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Image:Editor_at_Large%27s_test_image.png
The layout fix is easy, however, it seems that one script can turn off the other :-( I'll fiddle with it some more.

OK, if you use [[MediaWiki talk:Check-usage.js]] and include it /after/ gallerypreview, it should work now.

Hmm. Can you at least put a list of these main namespace pages in the little preview? And stop having 'no categories!!' warning if one of these links exists?
Thirdly.... can you please write it into MW???? :]
Of course I can, and it would be faster and would take care of the gallery issue. Alas, experience tells me that it will never get turned on, and an extension would never be installed on the live sites.
:( Didn't you write the original PHP MW, Magnus? Don't you hold any sway any more? :P
I find that the less excuses we let them have the better. If you write the code, others will do the lobbying for it. :)
BTW after a day of using this, I think it's SO cool and useful that we should turn it on for everyone as soon as we're reasonably sure it's bug free. Thoughts? (Ayelie's bug won't show up for regular users since we don't need to give them javascript checkusage by default)
cheers, Brianna
OK, I have written an extension called "MiniPreview". It does what gallerypreview does, only better: * Faster * also uses gallery pages (thumbnail images are then ordered by name) * can be limited to max number of categories/galleries/both (display issues) * i18n through MediaWiki namespace (built in, working on the details) * list of categories to ignore is editable though the same mechanism * adaptable through CSS
I'll put the latest paint on in tomorrow. Now if only someone could help me get this live on Commons...
