Fwd: Pushing User page photo's from wikinews to commons

Note: this is in reference to the english wikinews We have tons of personal photo's of users for userpages. most of them are not licensed freely, if licensed at all (some of them even claim they are ''fair use'' which is a total load of ...). I personally think that they shouldn't be on wikinews whatsoever (as they'd probably also be on the user's page at wikipedia, etc, and we currently have no policy's regarding them, so it'd just be easier to make them go somewhere that already has a policy), so I propose: *All new self photo's for user pages go on commons, and follow their policies ([[Commons:Criteria for inclusion#Wikimedia_Commons_is_a_common_central_media_repository_of_all_Wikimedia_projects]]) *old ones can stay [at wikinews], we won't delete them for now if there inproperly licensed as the user clearly wants them here, or decide what to do with them later *any new one's have to be at commons, or they go into the black abyss of death and doom. note: I'm cc-ing this commons-l, as it concerns them, and I have no idea if they'll like it or not, so if they say no, its not happening. its also posted on the wc at wikinews. --[[user:bawolff|Bawolff]]

I have set up mediawiki locally, on sign-in the user is authenticated, however when navigating to any other page (my preferences, my watchlist, main page), the user is no longer logged in. A cookie is being created and I have allowed all cookies. My only guess is that the session is being lost somehow. I am using the apache2 server on windows XP. Any suggestions as to where this problem can be troubleshot from or what is going on?

Speedy categories need attention

Hi people, I am constantly working on Speedy categories, but now I need your help. At the moment there is almost 1000 images in Duplicate category and circa 200 in Incorrectly named. These are images that need to be replaced with other ones. Since there is not all-wiki-projects-bot for this, it have to be replaced manually. This can be done by everbody, you not need to be an admin! I am now asking you for help. Please help unlink duplicate images. Cordially, Zirland

Flickr group for Commons

Hi all, I just started a group on Flickr called "Wikimedia Commons". I encourage anyone who has a Flickr account to join it. http://www.flickr.com/groups/wikimedia_commons/ It can be used as a way to increase our presence on Flickr and explain the utility of CC-BY and CC-BY-SA licenses to Flickr users, on their own turf where they are much more likely to be receptive to helping us out. Flickr users who are unexperienced with wikis/Commons can post photos to the group where I am sure one of us will gladly transfer them, if they are useful. Flickr users can have the satisfaction of seeing their work in prime web real estate, especially if they photograph famous people for example. :) People who photograph plants can also post photos there to get them IDed before transfer to Commons. I think some people also post comments on photos when they transfer them to Commons. It might be useful in such a comment to also post a link to this group now, to encourage them to learn more about how they can contribute to Wikimedia, the world's largest and most accessible of open content. So. Anyone think they're good enough with drawing and animation to create a definiltely free content version? Preferably larger. - d.

WELCOME LOG RIDES AGAIN!

Hello all! I am pleased to announce that the welcome log, and automatic {{welcome}}ing of new contributors, is back in action! This means that Welcome log fairies (or helpers) are once again needed. YOU DON'T NEED TO BE AN ADMIN FOR THIS! You only need to have a decent grasp on how Commons works. How do Welcome log helpers work? SieBot records which users it has welcomed, along with some handy links to the user's gallery and talk page etc.You, as a helper, quickly check that they are following Commons' rules. The tools you may need are: NSD/NLD, {{please link images}} ("please categorise your files"), {{please describe images}}... that's about it. Because this data is RECENT, the user is still likely to be around, so please, if they have uploaded five copyvios, write them a personal note rather than five standard warning templates. :/ Also! If it is apparent that the user speaks a language other than English, change their welcome message to that message. Hints for this are: image summaries in other languages, images used in projects other than en:. If a user doesn't need to be told about anything, then great! Remove them from the list (the welcome log). After you've given your user their advice, remove them from the list. Got a case that seems a bit tricky? Leave it and check someone else. Hi all, Some useful tips from the English Wikipedia Signpost: Image maps are now enabled. See http://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Extension:ImageMap for syntax usage. For user Javascript scripts, such as Extra-tabs and Quick-delete and the like, these functions will be useful: http://en.wikipedia.org/skins-1.5/common/wikibits.js WP:POST: 'addPortletLink() will conveniently add a link to any of the "portlets" in Monobook, including the content actions, personal tools, navigation sidebar, and toolbox.' cheers, Brianna user:pfctdayelise

For a short time it has been possible to license your art wok under a CC license on DeviantArt. I therefore ask the artists from DeviantArt to license the art they create for Wikipedia under the Creative Commons Attribution or the Creative Commons Attribution ShareAlike, so that they can be also shared on Wikimedia Commons.
